Maximus VI Gene - Q Code 99

I have a computer that is getting stuck at the ROG splash screen and displaying code 99 with the BOOT_DEVICE_LED illuminated.

I have tried lots of different things and I'm hoping for some new ideas outside of what I've found on google.

*-Moved RAM around (I don't have any spare to test with unfortunately)
*-Using both on board and PCI-E GPU
*-Various keyboard and mice
*-Removed everything from the board and reseated the bare essentials
*-Reset BIOS
*-Patted my head and stroked a llama whilst turning on with my right foot on a Wednesday

Nothing has got me past this splash screen. No other error messages. No changes.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated. Otherwise there's a bin with this motherboards name all over it.

Thanks!*

Hi billy213

Welcome to the ROG forum.

Try updating the bios as well as resetting it.

Are you getting a hard freeze, what exactly happens ?

Please list your complete pc specs.

How would I go about updating my bios? I can't actually access the bios to do it.

EDIT

https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?1142-How-to-use-ASUS-ROG-USB-BIOS-Flashback

I guess this has me covered?

The Maximus VI Gene has the bios flashback feature, you use a usb flash drive to update it.

Be sure the usb flash drive is formatted to .FAT32, download the latest bios file from the ASUS Support Center, extract the bios file to the usb flash drive then rename the bios file to M6G.CAP

Turn your pc off and let power to the board, insert the usb flash drive into the ROG Connect port then press and hold the bios flashback button (Blue) until it starts to flash.

Flashing should get faster and take about 90 seconds to complete, once flashing stops, start your pc.

Yep that article will work too, just be sure to extract it to the flash drive then rename it to M6G.CAP

Wow. Such a simple thing to of known about. Thank you very much! It lives!

I have taken the name off of the bin and I'll allow it to fight another day.

Out of interest; What would cause this to randomly go in to error having worked with the same components for years?*

Regardless.. Thank you very much for your rapid response and having the correct answer first try. Not one thing I read suggested to update the bios. Hopefully countless other people will see this who are suffering the same problem and will get it resolved as quickly as I have!*

It's hard to say what caused it but it seems the bios was corrupted.

Thank you for reporting, good to hear you're up and running. 🙂
