I tapped a key to wake Windows 8 from sleep mode yesterday. It came up then immediately cut power. I haven't been able to get it to come up since.

  • ASUS Maximus VI Formula
  • ASUS GTX 770 DirectCU II OC (2 of these)
  • i7-4770K @ 3.9 MHz
  • G.Skill Ripjaws F3-1600C9Q-32GXM
  • Power: Seasonic X-1250
  • CPU fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

Behavior with minimal hardware. I removed all hardware except power, fans, CPU, and RAM, and tried to use the built-in video:

  • Powers on, stops with code 79, no video. vga_led is on.
  • After a few seconds powers itself off then back on
  • Stops with code b2. No video signal. vga_led is on.
  • Sometimes, after a couple minutes, it cycles power off then on then repeats starting from the first step

Behavior with 1 GTX card plugged in:

  • Powers on, stops with code 79, no video. vga_led is on.
  • After a few seconds powers itself off then back on
  • Powers on, stops with code 79, no video. vga_led is on. (same as first time)
  • After a few seconds powers itself off then back on
  • Stops with code 9c. boot_device_led is on. Onscreen says to press DEL or F2 to enter BIOS, but keyboard is dead. I've tried with 2 different keyboards and tried all 4 USB 2.0 jacks in the back.
  • Sometimes, after a couple minutes, it cycles power off then on then repeats starting from the first step

I reflashed the BIOS, cleared CMOS, tried memOK, and reseated the CPU. None of these helped. I tested both keyboards with another machine; they're OK.

Since both USB and onboard video are dead my guess is either the MB or the CPU went bad. I don't have any other haswell systems to swap components with to test.

LOL and what did you do in that time, or did you just leave the board as is? Was the board connected to power during that time?

Well for the first 12 hour it was just plugged after I tried a couple of things I found in the forum. I tried to boot it then but the error persisted. Then I let another 24 hours pass and 'vuala', it did the cycles (start it up and led's go crazy with the checking numbers and it restarted) after the checks to booted and forced me to go into the UEFI so I left everything in default to be safe and it booted normally.

I don't know if this might be caused by a power failure on my house or if it just crashed. I am still uncertain. But power failing at home would explain a bit since it stopped running suddenly instead of getting overloaded by some OC setting. I'll try not to let it powered on while I'm not home until I buy a battery backup.

Thank you for letting me know how it is going, I will check back and see how things go once you get the board and are up and running as you should be.

And dead again.. I would not be surprised if it'd turn on tomorrow and my LoL account would be very grateful but this is definitely an issue. I shut down the PC as normal last night and today it won't post again. I am still RMA'ing as soon as I can afford the shipping cost and tear the PC apart.

If it turns out to be the CPU this might get a bit more serious but the board is really acting out. It's like it won't make it's mind up if to work or not. Have a good one guys and GL

So this is weird.. After a couple of days with the hole system off, PSU switched off, I turned it on, it did some cycles on the Q code display and got stuck on 99. WTH is wrong with this? Hehehe.. Is that better or worse or maybe says something new? I read up on it but nothing was helpfull since it talked about recently plugged device which I have non due to the out of duty thing.

Hope to hear back from you guys soon.. This is making me tons of curious of what went wrong.

EDIT: This post is after I tried a couple of things. Backbuttons to clear sschmod, restart button, hard shutdown which leads to 00 with fan on, and some other trivial 'I am bored without PC' kinda stuff..
