Maximus VI Formula Overview and Discussion Thread

The Maximus VI Formula should be available to purchase in a few weeks. A motherboard many have been waiting for, and for good reason. Plenty of cool features on offer, we won't go into them all, but have picked out some of the salient ones for you to check out below:

Board layout and features at a glance:

Gaming Features

SupremeFX

The Maximus VI Formula sports a specialized audio solution called SupremeFX. Based on Realtek’s latest ALC1150 chipset, the Cirrus Logic DAC and the TPA6120 headphone amplifier and an optimized PCB layout - isolating PCB layers and spacing sensitive traces away from other areas of the motherboard. Shielding is also utilized to minimize spurious noise from entering signal lines. High quality capacitors are used for power supply decoupling to minimize ripple and provide a low impedance at audio critical frequencies. The end result is a 120dB SNR, placing the Maximus VI Formula's onboard audio solution on par with the best discrete soundcards available.

On the software side, the latest addition to the package is Sonic Radar:

The Sonic Radar GUI

Sonic Radar is a HUD that is useful in FPS games. It shows a visual representation of where sounds are coming from. The location of footsteps, gunshots, explosions and anything else is shown in the 360 degree HUD while gaming:

BF3 – Sonic Radar showing direction of audio effects

The HUD can be made more transparent and its location on the screen changed. Sonic Radar very useful feature when gaming with stereo headsets, where surround effects are simulated and may not be easy to pinpoint.

On the subject of headsets, Perfect Voice has been added to improve the clarity of VOIP calls. It’s a software based filter that uses digital signal processing to remove noise pickup from your mic while making a call:

DSP helps reduce ambient noise for clearer comms

Perfect Voice works with any plug in microphone/headset to clean up voice transmission during calls.

ROG RAMDISK

With high density memory modules and kits becoming the norm, many of us have an abundance of free memory on our systems that never gets utilized. ROG RAM Disk has been coded to take advantage of that free space to help speed up the system.

ROG RAM Disk GUI

Unlike many free RAM drive tools, ROG RAM DISK has no size limitations – up to 80% of the free memory (not used by the OS) can be configured as a RAM drive.

To get you an idea of how fast a RAM drive is, check the screenshot below:

10000 MB/s sequential write speeds

Applications stored on ROG RAM DISK are written to hard storage (HHD/SSD) when the system is prompted for shutdown.

Of course, re-installing games to the RAM DISK would be a painful experience. That's why ROG RAM DISK has a feature know as Junction Mode.

Setting a junction point to a game folder allows critical game files to be transferred to the RAM DISK without interfering with the original installation. Just point the software at the game folder and it will take care of the rest. This way, critical files such as maps can be accessed directly from the RAM DISK, speeding up load times.

Discussing features is fine, but what really matters for many users in knowing a board can overclock and run stable. How about 24 hour stability testing? Here's a few screenies from JJ, showing the Maximus VI Formula running different memory configs and CPU overclocks:

Over 24 hours AIDA64 passed at 4.7GHz DDR3-2800 16GB 4x4

Over 24 hours AIDA64 passed at 4.6GHz DDR3-2133 32GB 8X4

4.8GHz DDR3-2400 AIDA 1 Hour - right at the limits of the CPU and cooling

Use this thread to discuss/share results when you get your boards folks 🙂

This is the first time I have built a computer so I have limited knowledge. My system posts and all is well enough. Downloaded a few things and can get onto the network etc. My problem is everytime I log onto the computer it always defaults to the ROG screen and asks me to F1 into the UEFI Bios. The only way from there so far is to Exit > Hit ASUS EZ mode > Boot Menu and select my Samsung SSD drive and only then will it Start Windows. I am missing something here. There is a red light on my mobo that is sometimes lit for BOOT_ DEVICE_LED

Have you set the SSD to be your first boot device in the UEFI, under boot options?

My screen still wants me to boot into UEFI when I turn on the PC. Then I have to get into the UEFI screen and choose EZ Bios > Choose Boot Drive and physically have to choose my Samsung SSD 840 Pro and it is the only drive hooked up. This then takes me to Windows. I did change to a different SATA cable but no difference. I am only running defaults at this time as I cannot get past this issue. Windows is running fine and all updates have been completed for Windows 7 Ultimate. I have not yet updated my SSD drive or installed the ASUS DVD. At this point I just want to go to Windows when I turn on the computer. AHCI was automatically chosen by default. The BOOT_DEVICE_LED on the mobo does come on until I boot into the UEFI and chose the SSD drive. Should I post this on the wider community. Am I supposed to make a change somewhere in the UEFI as everything is at default. It seems like just a setting somewhere. I have not updated BIOS as I am on the default 0714

This worked for me on the Z77 WS

Go into BIOS, Reset all settings to default, save and exit.

I was then able to go into BIOS and manually re-edit my settings and all was well with the world again.

A few things:

1) Place the drive on an Intel SATA port if not already (not ASMedia).
2) Take a screen capture of the BOOT settings page in UEFI Advanced mode showing the BOOT device order tree.

Anecdotal info; use only the SATA cables that shipped with the board.

Thanks Raja, I am using the supplied SATA cables, I am connected to Port 1 on the Intel Sata Ports it is (SataG_1) and shows this under the SATA tab in bios. Everything is at default and I have made no changes. When I mouse over the only installed drive it shows the Samsung SSD drive. Its not in color its grayed out does this make a difference? When I hit Exit and save or even no save, as soon as I exit the UEFI it goes right in to Windows. But why during startup or restart it always goes to the ROG Splashscreen and tells me to hit F1. Maybe a different approach is needed.
Windows wants me to go into bios first before loading why?

Please refer back to my original post for instructions on info I requested from you. To be more specific, number 2 in that list.

BOOT_DEVICE_LED comes up huh? i'm willing to bet your problem is very simple and the problem lays under the advanced tab --->HDD BBS Properties. Force your SSD to #1 boot option and you'll be Golden 🙂

How do I take a screen capture while in Bios? I did go to the Samsung site to download latest SSD firmware. One of the tabs while optimizing the SSD states " Not Confirmed - Your OS is currently optimized for use with an HHD. You can optimize it for use with an SSD via the OS Optimization menu". Perhaps Windows is looking for an HDD and cant find it as I only have an SSD installed which I installed to from my now disconnected external optical drive. Since Operating system is on the SSD why doesn't Windows boot immediately instead of making me go to the bios first. It does seem like Windows is looking for a different device or is not recognizing my ssd during startup but only after I go into bios but just guessing. Could I have missed a step while downloading Windows and point it to the SSD?

Thanks Myk SilentShadow.
I uaually go to the Advanced Tab in bios. I don't see HDD BBS properties as you state and my SSD is always in the #1 position. Should it be colorized red? as it turns red when I hover over it but it never stays red. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

When I am under Advanced Mode I see the SSD and it is the only device there. When I select it - it turns red. When I select Exit and just before I exit the screen the SSD turns gray (not sure if this means my SSD is not being saved) - when I then try to Save and exit bios I get the popup - You have not made any changes in bios. I have tried SATAG_6 port but this makes no difference. Windows just is not booting directly from the SSD when I startup. Could this be a Windows problem as during startup only the ROG splashscreen comes up and makes me go into bios and exit then Windows starts.
