Maximus VI Formula Overview and Discussion Thread

The Maximus VI Formula should be available to purchase in a few weeks. A motherboard many have been waiting for, and for good reason. Plenty of cool features on offer, we won't go into them all, but have picked out some of the salient ones for you to check out below:

Board layout and features at a glance:

Gaming Features

SupremeFX

The Maximus VI Formula sports a specialized audio solution called SupremeFX. Based on Realtek’s latest ALC1150 chipset, the Cirrus Logic DAC and the TPA6120 headphone amplifier and an optimized PCB layout - isolating PCB layers and spacing sensitive traces away from other areas of the motherboard. Shielding is also utilized to minimize spurious noise from entering signal lines. High quality capacitors are used for power supply decoupling to minimize ripple and provide a low impedance at audio critical frequencies. The end result is a 120dB SNR, placing the Maximus VI Formula's onboard audio solution on par with the best discrete soundcards available.

On the software side, the latest addition to the package is Sonic Radar:

The Sonic Radar GUI

Sonic Radar is a HUD that is useful in FPS games. It shows a visual representation of where sounds are coming from. The location of footsteps, gunshots, explosions and anything else is shown in the 360 degree HUD while gaming:

BF3 – Sonic Radar showing direction of audio effects

The HUD can be made more transparent and its location on the screen changed. Sonic Radar very useful feature when gaming with stereo headsets, where surround effects are simulated and may not be easy to pinpoint.

On the subject of headsets, Perfect Voice has been added to improve the clarity of VOIP calls. It’s a software based filter that uses digital signal processing to remove noise pickup from your mic while making a call:

DSP helps reduce ambient noise for clearer comms

Perfect Voice works with any plug in microphone/headset to clean up voice transmission during calls.

ROG RAMDISK

With high density memory modules and kits becoming the norm, many of us have an abundance of free memory on our systems that never gets utilized. ROG RAM Disk has been coded to take advantage of that free space to help speed up the system.

ROG RAM Disk GUI

Unlike many free RAM drive tools, ROG RAM DISK has no size limitations – up to 80% of the free memory (not used by the OS) can be configured as a RAM drive.

To get you an idea of how fast a RAM drive is, check the screenshot below:

10000 MB/s sequential write speeds

Applications stored on ROG RAM DISK are written to hard storage (HHD/SSD) when the system is prompted for shutdown.

Of course, re-installing games to the RAM DISK would be a painful experience. That's why ROG RAM DISK has a feature know as Junction Mode.

Setting a junction point to a game folder allows critical game files to be transferred to the RAM DISK without interfering with the original installation. Just point the software at the game folder and it will take care of the rest. This way, critical files such as maps can be accessed directly from the RAM DISK, speeding up load times.

Discussing features is fine, but what really matters for many users in knowing a board can overclock and run stable. How about 24 hour stability testing? Here's a few screenies from JJ, showing the Maximus VI Formula running different memory configs and CPU overclocks:

Over 24 hours AIDA64 passed at 4.7GHz DDR3-2800 16GB 4x4

Over 24 hours AIDA64 passed at 4.6GHz DDR3-2133 32GB 8X4

4.8GHz DDR3-2400 AIDA 1 Hour - right at the limits of the CPU and cooling

I Built my computer ( formula VI,asus 780 gtx,4770k,16 gb (vengeance 2400 MHz) SSD Samsung 128gb,Corsair h110 water cooler,1050 w power supply. after 1 hour playing bf3 I got this error,The system encountered an uncorrectable...
STOP: 0x00000124 .I remove video card/water cooler/Ram/everything in the pc and I still have the Blue screen, how I can fix that. thanx

Formula VI Crashes System!!

I spent a whole night on and off the phone with tech support (thanks guys) and here were the issues.

I was told the board was not compatible with ASUS NVidia GTX 770? This is what I did:
-Installed windows 8
-Inserted the Asus motherboard disc to install the mother board drivers.

CRASH. Rince and repeat 3x's.

They then mentioned that it could be Windows 8 causing the problem, so:
-I reformatted and installed a copy of Windows 7
-Was able to install the motherboard drivers
-Tried to install the graphics card drivers
-CRASH

I was told to try to update motherboard BIOS.
-Booted in safe mode and updated the drivers
-Success, I was able to install the graphic card drivers.

The next day I tried to install the drivers for my new Logitech webcam:
-Failed, webcam won't work with the Motherboard.

What's going on?!! Can I get some confirmation from a company rep to check with the engineers that:

(a) The motherboard is going to be fully compatible and stable with windows 8
(b) The motherboard is going to be fully compatible with the GTX 770.
(c) The motherboard is going to improve support for peripheral hardware through bios updates.

I just spend $4000 on a system, and it wasn't a very nice first experience. I bought two expensive high end Asus Monitors, top of the line Asus motherboard, one of the best Asus graphics cards, Asus blue ray burner, memory on the HCL. You would think that you couldn't get a more compatible system.

What's going on?

I was advised to return the motherboard and graphic card and get two that are compatible? Really?

I've always like Asus stuff and paid a premium for it, but I'm considering paying the 10% restocking fee and going back to a mac.

Thanks,

Rob.

I have no compatibility problems with my VI Formula and Asus GTX 780 gpu under Windows 7 and 8.1 Preview. I would assume there shouldn't be a driver problem with the 770 (same drivers from NVidia?). Did you download the latest drivers from Asus and Nvidia?

With every crash there should be some sort of memory dump or error message. Have you tried to analyze the errors? Check Windows Event Viewer for system logs? http://download.cnet.com/WhoCrashed/3000-2094_4-75205821.html this can probably give you a good indication of which drivers are causing the crash.

Also have you done any ram tests or cpu stress test to make sure the rest of the system components are stable? Are you overclocked or running stock?

Posting a full parts and config list would help.

I am experiencing an issue with my Maximus VI Formula and my h100i. For some reason the MOBO is not detecting a tach reading from the 3 port fan header coming off the h100i pump. I have attempted to configure both the CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT headers to advanced mode but have not had any success. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I managed to run some CFR sticks at DDR3-3000 on the 1.25x strap, which I couldn't do at all on the Extreme. It did require me to use initial BCLK lower than 125MHz for some reason.

I am not sure why it wouldn't be reporting the speed but the I believe the cpu and cpu_opt are pwm control only so your pump (or any 3 pin device) will always run full blast off those headers.

I have a similar concern that I haven't had much luck with yet. I'd like to use a separate 90 watt PSU to power the water cooling system to make it easier to fill and to WC system maintenance without having to start up whole system or disconnect cables.

I had planned to connect the PWM lead from the Swiftech MCP35X2 to the MoBo header. My concern was that having a second independent CPU and if the BIOS would detect the absence of an rpm signal and prevent system startup or provide a fail safe shutdown in case the pump cord got accidentally disconnected.

The CPU fan headers can be configured to issue a warning if RPM drops below a certain threshold. I think Fan Xpert has a failsafe built in if the CPU fan header is at 0 RPM and shuts down the system. You can test this by placing a fan on that header and removing it while the system is running. If the board shutsdown, there's your answer. If not, you'll have to use something custom.

Well can't test it just yet 🙂 Don't have the MoBo..... my build plans included an Enthoo Primo case (now slated to ship October 18) and two Asus Poseidons .... no frakin idea when it will be released. 🙂
