Maximus VI Extreme - problem with booting

LaserPete

I have a problem with booting when going from motherboard standby to powering on.

After pressing the start button on the case. It starts to boot but before any codes even show on the display it shuts down for 2 seconds then it tries to boot up again. Sometimes it will get through the booting up and sometimes it won't. If it hangs up it will stop at code "15" (15-18 is "Pre-memory System Agent initialization is started"). The red CPU LED is also on.

When it hangs, I hold down the case power button to bring it back to standby and try again. After three tries with a stalled boot I will cycle the power supply off/on which will usually get it to boot on the first try. There is alway the 2 second stop before a retry on cold boots. Restarts through the OS are fine.

I thought it might be the power supply but now i'm not so sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Hi LaserPete, Welcome to the ROG community. When you get a boot loop like that your machine is not fully stable. And by looking at this, It looks like it is your RAM. Go into your bios and set up your ram manually. First Hit F5 to set defaults, Extreme Tweaker tab, AI overclock tuner to manual, I believe the Dram voltage for your kit is 1.6v but you can double check that, Enter the Dram voltage, The frequency 2133 and the first four timings in the Dram timing control. Let all other ram timings to auto. F10 and Enter.

How does it go?

Hello Nate,

I'm running the memory at 1333 MHz 9-9-9-24-2T running the stock SPD setting that the board detected. I also tested each stick at 2133 MHz using Memtest 86+ 5. They all passed, 3 test runs each.

I just realized that I haven't loaded any firmware for the connected OC panel. I'll do that first thing.

Thanks,

Pete

Ok, When using the o.c. panel, there are 2 switches inside of it, slow mode and pause. You will want to set those to off. Otherwise your BIOS and cpu-z will stick at cpu speed of 800MHz.

Thanks Nate,

I'll need to open up the case and pull out the panel to check. I'm getting 800 to 3500 right now as it is though, looking at CPU-Z. Also how does one update the firmware for the OC panel, xHCI is disabled. I get an error when trying to run the firmware update "Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

I will continue with this tomorrow, its getting late.

Thanks again Nate
