Maximus V Gene suddenly running GTX680 in 8x instead of 16x

Hello,

This morning I turned on my machine only to find that it wouldn't boot. Just a blank screen. No post, nothing. I've had no trouble at all with this board, so I just cleared the bios, and re-entered my settings. After I finished, I noticed my MSI GTX680 Lightning GPU is only running at pcie 8x, both in the bios, and under load in GPU-Z. I've inspected the card, and the motherboard for any problems. Everything looks fine. I tried the latest BIOS, same problem. Swapped PCIE slots, and back, same problem. What has happened to my poor rig?

What version BIOS were you using before you flashed to the latest one?

I believe it was Version 1408.

Remove your GTX 680. Clear your CMOS by removing the battery for 5 minutes then putting it back. Insert the GTX 680 and power up your system. Does it still say 8x in the BIOS?

Thanks for the advice. Should I just power off and remove then remove card and battery, then replace both and boot? Or do I need to boot at all in-between those steps. Thanks!

Yeah. Power off. Switch off the PSU. Disconnect the power cable. Then do as mentioned in my previous post. Let's see if this solves the problem.

No go :(. Gave the battery 10 minutes, this fully cleared the CMOS, checked and the card was still listed as 8x native. This makes me a sad panda 😞

1. Download the 1204 BIOS from Asus website.
2. Format a USB pendrive to FAT32.
3. Extract the BIOS file and rename the file to M5G.CAP.
4. Put the BIOS file on your USB pendrive.
5. Shutdown your system.
6. Connect the USB pendrive to the white usb port.
7. Press the USB BIOS Flashback button/ROG Connect button for three seconds till the LED begins to blink, then release.
8. Wait till the LED stops blinking.
9. Power on your system.

Any change?

I Have the same problem for 6 months now...its not the card its the board...i have sevceral cards and they aslso run 8x..
my 680 does to but it has no performance loss on other 680 that are running 16x ...
think it says 8x but realllly is 16x ive disided that i can llive with this rather then loose my board for weeks to rma 🙂
