Maximus V Gene - fitting stuff on

Hello all,

I'm planning a build with:
- i7-3770k
- Maximus V Gene
- EVGA Signature 2 GTX 680
- Noctua NH-DH14 cooler
- Low profile memory

Will it all fit on the mATX mobo? Has anyone done it and do they have a photo to show the clearance between the fan and the gfx card? The Noctua site mentions possible interference between the fan and large graphics cards but I haven't seen anyone with the 680, the V Gene and the Noctua 14 - perhaps for the reason that it can't be done?

Is there a great difference in spacing between the V Gene and V Formula for the 1155 slot / DIMM slots / PCI-E? I don't mind spending a bit more on the Formula if it's the only way of fitting the jigsaw fits together and still getting the Asus goodies.

Any recommendations on suitable low profile memory for the above would be appreciated. I'm planning on 2x 8GB dimms and prefer 2400MHz.

Many thanks.

it will be a tight squeeze whit the noctua, it will come real close/touch the screencard.
try a search on noctua on this forum and see if you can get a few hits, and there should be pics of the noctua fitted on a mobo and a screencard some where

Will be no problems fitting the Noctua NH-D14 on the MVG! You can check my thread (link in the signature)... - the olny thing you may want to do is to put some tape on the Noctua's fan clips for insulation... better safe than sorry...

As for the memory, both GSkill's TridentX series and Corsair's Dominator GTs have removable heat spreaders (just the top of it) - both of them will fit under the Noctua (again, check my thread...)

What case are you going to use? I had issues with the bottom mount drive cage in my Silverstone case not fitting with another big Noctua cooler in place. I switched to a CoolerMaster tower cooler, but even with that there wasn't room for a push fan - I had to mount it in a pull configuration.

Fortunately the pull config shoots air directly out the rear case vent and seems to work great at both keeping the CPU cool and keeping the case cool (since most warm CPU cooler air goes straight out the exit instead of swirling around inside). The new Intel chips seem to run super-cool too (though I don't overclock).

Guys thanks for your help.

I'd planned on the Fractal Design Define R4 case but was a little concerned about fitting the Noctua in it and that the quiet case design would hinder cooling too much and so defeat the entire idea.

Can anyone help with the question about spacing on the motherboard? Is there a difference between the V Gene and the V Formula, i.e. is there more room on the ATX board between the edge of the cooler and the faster PCI-E slot?

While I'm not sure at all about how the Noctua will fit in that case - as I said before, will be no problem fitting it on the Maximus V Gene! I think, there is no difference in spacing at Maximus V Formula/Extreme either - will fit there too!

I'd try to figure out what the area around the CPU will look like once the motherboard is in the case, if there's any stuff in that area that will block the cooler or mounting the fans you want to mount. If I'd done that, I'd have noticed that the bottom-mounted drive cage was gonna be an issue.

An alternative would be paying like $10 more and get a Corsair H80 which offers better performance and you won't have to worry about RAM/VGA clearance. Or you can get the Antec H20 Kuhler 920 for the same price as the D14. And after looking at your case, you have various ways to mount it too. 😛
