Maximus V Extreme Freezing Issues - Q Code 64, 99, A2

Working on my first build in a few years, and am having continuous freezing issues at different times during the initial setup. Sometimes I can start loading win 7 until the freeze, other times I can't even get 2 seconds in the boot.

I have removed everything except the basics. Onboard video, cpu, memory in the slot furthest from the cpu. 90% of the time it will lock up before allowing me to enter bios.

I have updated the bios on bios A and have left bios b alone. I have tied both numerous times with no success.

The only consistency is that it is never consistent. In 4 boots I received 4 different Q codes…64, 99 x2, A2.

The Q LED is often lit on “Boot_device_led”.

If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful. It may be time to RMA this bad boy.

Case: Thor V2
CPU: Core i7-3770K.
Board: Asus Maximus V Extreme.
VGA: Nvidia 680
Ram: 32GB Corsair Vengeance
SSD: 1x 250 GB Samsung and 1x 3TB Western digital

Did you have any OC setting when you running the system?
If no,Could you please help to replace the power supply for test?
Or check the CPU pin have any crooked situation?

1. Which procedure did you use to update the BIOS?

2. And which version BIOS did you updated to?

3. Are you using the HDMI port or the display port?

Thanks for the replies...

1. No OC

2. Unfortunately, I don't have an available power supply for a test... 😞

3. I used the USB port update for the Bios. Where you press the update button on the Motherboard. I am at 1508...or 1506... it appears to be the latest release.

4. Yes I am using the HDMI on the display port.

Strip everything down to the bare minimum like you did before. But this time instead of inserting the ram in the furthest slot from the cpu, insert it into DIMM_A2 (First red slot). Then do a clear CMOS. Then boot up that baby again. See if you can get into the BIOS.

Edit: Report QLED codes if any.

Ps...the computer had only been running for about 15 seconds before the error appeared.

Done. two boot attempts...first freeze at the logo...the second attempt it made it to the black screen tell you to press F1 to enter setup.

Q Code - A2 and Boot_device_led

Got a new one... CPU over temperature error. Hmmm the plot thickens...

Double checked the cables and have 4 fans plus the CPU fan. I will buy some thermal paste tomorrow...perhaps thermal pad that came with the I7 is insufficient.

Please remove all your components and start the build from scratch. Pay special attention to how your CPU cooler is mounted.

Only have one stick or ram fitted for now and once we get your system up and running correctly then you can add the rest of the memory.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

Reseated everything. Cleaned and reapplied thermal paste to cpu.

1st boot freeze at q code 64
2nd boot freeze at q code 99
3rd boot freeze at q code 64
4th boot freeze at q code A2 - was able to get into bios - upon reset...freezing again occured.
5th boot freeze at q code 99

"Boot_device_led" lit on all freezes. All freezes occured within 5-15 seconds of booting. Tried both A and B bios for the testing.
