Maximus iv gene slot 1 pci express compatibility problem

Sorry for my english.

I have problems with the first pci express slot (the x16 one)
If i put my 8800 gts or my raid card (x8 card) in it, the card did not work.
They work fine in the other slots (x8 slot2 and x4 slot 3).

I suspect that the slot1 is only compatible with x16 cards.

I am not happy at all, because my gpu card take two slot and i had to
unmount the raid card braquet to ghetto mount it in the x4 slot because
there is not enough space. I have to put a plastic sheet beetween the cards
to prevent electric problems with the gpu waterblock.

Am i right about the x16 xlot or this slot is dead or there is a solution to my problem ?

The first PCI-E x16 slot is running x16 when only one card in the board, putting anything else in the second PCI-E x16 slot will electronicly locked to x8/x8 bcs LGA1155 cpu's only got x16 lines for Graphic cards so it will be divided into 2 x8.

the lower open-ended x4 is running of the chipset.

Thank you for your reponse, i know that with two cards the slots become x8.

I tried the two cards one in each slot and this what happened :

First configuration : 8800 gts in slot1 and raid card in slot2. The screens didn't display anything. I was afraid i broke my video card.

Second configuration : raid card in slot2 and 8800 gts in slot1. The 8800 gts worked ( 😄 my video card was not dead) but the raid card was not detected as it was not present.

Present configuration : 8800 gts in slot2, raid card in 4x slot. Both worked but i can't leave it mounted like that.

When you put a second card and run SLi the top slot will run 8x that is correct.

There is no problem that is how it work. Single card 16x - when you add a second card the top PCIe lane switches to 8x. It is in your user manual by the way. 🙂

I know that from the start.

I am not asking qestions about slots mode, it have a problem in reality.

I tried all the combinations of card in the slots but the card in slot1 do not work.

So, do you know why my cards do not work in slot1 ? and perhaps a solution ?
Do you know if i buy a recent video card, i will work in slot1 ?

Ah forgive me I missunderstood.

Could you please tell me how you know your card is not working, and if you are using GPUz could you post a screenshot of your GPUz

I know it didn't work because i could not see any image on my screens at boot. No boot or bios screen at all. Nothing.

In slot2 computer start normally.

Ok now I get it.


Please toggle the PCIe lane selectors on and off a few times - they can get stuck and maybe that is what has happened to your board.
