Keyboard and mouse don't work in system recovery.

Greetings!

I'm having quite a bit of trouble with my one month old ASUS Z97-A. Recently the rtc clock stopped working and so far a bios flash to 1205 and default settings seem to work. Need to test it out with ram set to 1600mhz.

The other problem though is that keyboard and mouse worked sporadically when trying to install windows. Now that I need system recovery options they don't work at all!

My system:

Asus z97-A
Intel 4790
be silent shadow rock slim cpu cooler
g.skill sniper 1600mhz cl9 16gb (8x2)
sapphire r9 290 vapor-x
seasonic platinum 760W
crucial mx100 ssd
fractal design r4 case

What I tried:

- flashed bios to version 1205
- set usb to full initialization
- usb legacy support = enabled
- ps2 set to full initialization

- removed all other usb devices leaving just mouse and keyboard
- tried using ps2 adapter with mouse and keyboard (it is possible that the adapter is botched so I'm getting one tomorrow to test that out, since with this one the peripherals don't work in fully booted windows 7 either)
- tried booting from cd as if to reinstall windows - doesn't work either
- waited for more than 15 min if it was the case of some missing drivers and it needed some time
- no, it's not plugged in usb3 port

edit: just remembered, does fast boot have to do anything with this?

When booting into system recovery options I watched the num lock LED on the keyboard. It's on and off up to the end of regular windows booting logo. Just after that it shows the old windows logo with separate ticks in the loading bar for a split second and THAT is when everything goes black. After that, whenever I press a mouse button the led in the mouse flashes once. If i remove the mouse and plug it back in the led shines constantly.

Oh, and if I use the ps2 adapter (which MAY be broken) the mouse led isn't flashing and responds correctly when adjusting sensitivity "on the fly". The mouse doesn't move though.

I'm stumped. Any ideas? What else can I try?

Thanks in advance!

It could well be the adapter deWiced, What keyboard and mouse are you using?
Do you have another mouse and keyboard to test with?

Go into device manager and check all drivers relating to peripherals are up to date.

They don't work when run through the adapter (even in booted windows) or in windows recovery options (adapter or usb). However, everything works perfectly otherwise, even in bios and on other computers. Even if adapter is broken it doesn't explain why it wouldn't work plugged in usb...

The device manager looks fine. There was one pci unrecognized device but I uninstalled that and doesn't seem to help with this problem.

I'm using a Gigabyte m7 Thor mouse and a generic logitech keyboard. I don't have a spare keyboard but I did try with a wireless mouse and razer deathadder. Again, mind you, everything works just fine in windows and bios, yet it doesn't budge when entering recovery options or reinstall windows menu etc.

That is very odd.

Does your usb device (keyboard and mouse) work in recovery with the USB3 port? Sure you tested that.

Yep, I did try it with usb3 in windows and in recovery. It doesn't budge in recovery, though it works just fine in bios/windows. It's really weird. Googled it thoroughly and usually there's just "oops had it in usb3" or something. But here it's dead as soon as it enters windows installation/recovery mode...

Any other ideas? I'm out of them!

Thing is the USB controller is on the CPU.

Now the fact the device is picked up in BIOS means it is not hardware.

Recovery mode is OS so it might just be that you have a corrupted back up or recovery partition. I am sorry to say it looks like you will need to do a full reinstall of OS unless someone else has a better idea.

The thing is that I tried booting from the cd too, so there's nothing to be corrupted. Even ran checks like sfc scan. Nothing wrong. If I try to reinstall from cd keyboard and mouse still don't work, so I kind of can't, even if I wanted to.

This is doing my head in...

edit: Really? No one has any idea what to try next?

Did you end up sorting this issue as I have the exact same problem and its driving me crazy...
