Hello, a new version for Windows 8.1 comes out? That would be super!
In kaspersky forum write few to appear a new version on the 18th of October for windows 8.1. Is this true for the ROG version?

I think the pertinent point is that on the Asus website it states quite clearly that the boards support Win 8.1, and I think it is only reasonable to expect that the bundled software supports Win 8.1 too.

Having said that, I don't use the bundled AV software, so I don't really mind either way 😛

but how are we as users expected to know that the software wouldnt work on win 8.1? neither Asus nor Microsoft warned us about this (one could argue that, that isnt Asus job) like Microsoft did back when users upgraded to win 7 or win 8. You had warnings which contained a list of programs that would most likely be incompatible with the new OS, but win 8.1 did not offer that...

Win8.1 offers that if you upgrade via the Windows Upgrade Assistant as suggested by Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8

Actually no. The board supports Win 8.1 and that's it. The bundled third party software supports whatever they support at the time of release. No one is giving free upgrades to third party software unless that specific third party software is having a policy of free upgrades for life or specific limited duration which Kaspersky does not.
When you bought a DVD-RW drive that had Nero or PowerDVD bundled with it did you ever get a free upgrade? When you bought a PC or a laptop with a version of Windows did you ever get a free upgrade to the next? Such is the nature of OEM licenses. ASUS is no exception to the standard rules.

I had to resort to windows defender after updating to windows 8.1 because of this. I hope it will be rectified soon.

ASUS technical support response to my email:

Dear customer

Regarding the described problem, unfortunately does not exist a procedure to have the activation code for the 2014 edition .

Thank you for contacting ASUS Technical Service.

So It seems no free Kaspersky Anti Virus for Windows 8.1 users...

Like I said, the license is for 2013 edition. There will be no upgrade. If Kaspersky patches 2013 to work with 8.1 you'll be able to update it. But upgrading to the new product (2014) is out of the question.
If anything you should bug Kaspersky about 2013 8.1 support. Lots of software developers have the nasty habit of releasing a new version entirely in order to support a new os version instead of fixing the current one. Imho it's a bad practice and in the case of 8.1, that is a service pack in reality, it's even worse.
But dont't expect ASUS to pay a new OEM license to upgrade Kaspersky. That will not happen.
