Intel i7 - 3970X CPU OC

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know what your experience is with the Intel i7 - 3970X and OC limits.

The CPU along with Video cards are on water and currently I have it OC to 4.7Ghz via the BIOS Easy OC features.

Just wanted to know what others are getting with the same CPU?

Other hardware is in my signature.

The question itself if wrong.
OC potential of every single CPU is different. OCing is all about to find out the most "comfortable" settings for your hardware.

You can read some guides first, one can be found here


In average, you could get around 5.3 GHZ on H2O cooling, but you shouldn't run these settings for 24/7 use because the CPU will die pretty fast.

Agree with dart..

4,5 gh<- 4,7 ghz, is a great 24/7 OC..

Voltages can be kept safe, and stability and temps are excellent..

The pre installed bios OC profiles, i am afraid to say, is not very optimal, and in general provide a over voltage in the overall settings..

Yeah, I get the same, with my 3930K that cost US$400-500 less! No reason to go X if you are going to OC.

4,5 ghz = great
4,6 ghz = great
4,7 ghz= also great
4,8 ghz = now, this is great, work on getting this one stable.. You prob wont get much higher stable 24/7..
4,9 ghz = Starts to go downhill (instability/heat), still kinda stable, but not like the 4,7 ghz..
5,0 ghz = not 24/7 solid stable (even if it might run for a week or so without crash, it prob will crash sooner or later. No real use for this OC, in 24/7, the gain is small, and the negative starting to appear now.....now stretching the physics of the cpu, heat/Voltage/instability..
5,1 ghz = Easy to OC, no boot issues (if profile is good), instability, heat(voltage. Not for 24/7.. will crash in time also.. Less stable than 5,0 ghz.
5,2 ghz = its up to the cpu specimen, and the overclockers skills.. massive heat, voltage, may be boot issues, You must be slightly nuts to make it somewhat stable (benchmarking)..
5,3 ghz = Like the 5,2 ghz, almost all common sense for GENTLE overclocking is gone, this clock may include very high voltage settings/massive heat, boot issues, BSOD, you name it.. bonus OC..
5,4 ghz =Please dont...

5,0 ghz and above = is for benchmarking, if you ask me..

Getting 4.7 on my 3970x without much effort. Also have 64GB a Corsair Vengeance 1866MHz RAM kit. I've been playing with 4.8, but can't get past 20 rounds of IBT or 8 hours of Prime95. Maybe needs more than 1.4v Vcore, but I am not willing to go higher than that.

8 hours of prime!!.. man what are you doing?

Is prime that much fun?

and yes, 1,4v seem like a good choice for that clock

I'll start prime before going to bed, check in the morning, if good will let it run all day while at work. It takes about 10 hours to cycle through every FFT size on blend, so with an all day run it cycles twice. If it gets through that successfully I consider my system stable.
