i7-4790k, bios 1505, no windows OS

Hello,

I'm trying to install the new i7-4790k cpu on Maximus VI Extreme board. I updated the bios to 1505 using the back panel and a USB stick. When I try to boot, it does not POST and I get Q_code: 00 and q_led_cpu lights up. I've also tried clearing the CMOS with the button on the back panel.

I see a lot of similar posts with advice to do the BIOS upgrade via Windows. I'm not running Windows however. Is there any way to get this new cpu running without the use of Windows?

The bios update seems fine. I can boot fine with the 4770k cpu and the bios shows version 1505. All the info I see suggests the use of bios update in windows, but again, just want to know if it's possible without using Windows. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I also have the 4790k. What files do i need to put on the flashdrive to update the Bios to 1505?

Hi, harryirene and welcome

Motherboards with z87 chipset like the M6E and my M6F are configured to run the first round of gen4 Haswell processors. To run the later Haswell and Devil's Canyon CPU, like the 4790K, they need to be updated with the installer utility that's included in the BIOS 1505 download. The utility fixes some management engine code needed by the newer processors. The problem there is that the installer is a Windows program. It really needs to be run with a first round Haswell and an installed Windows. I ran the updater in Windows with a 4770K, then switched to a 4790K. It works.

If your issue with Windows is that you are running Linux or something else, I can only suggest a temporary installation of Windows just for the update. (Borrow an installation disk, never connect it to the internet and have it gone as soon as the update is done.) There are Windows emulators that run in Linux, aren't there? Perhaps one such would run the updater.

Perhaps ASUS technical support can help with another version of the updater for the OS you use.

Are you sure your Qcode is 00 cause D0 is very similar and that would indicate a CPU initialization error.
You have already used the best method to update your Bios.

You must run the update tool from windows, just as mentioned by jab383, he is correct. running the update from the BIOS wont do it. You need a old haswell processor in first then do what Jab383 says.

You could try to use the BIOS flashback with a beta bios 1504 I think it was. This has the updater built in. Not able to verify that this will work but what do you have to loose right now.
