How do I update my BIOS in order to use IVY-E

Hi there,
heres the thing: I was using E5-2620 ES, this CPU is only supported by early version BIOS (R4E),
so my BIOS version has been on .ROM (before 1404)

Yesterday I upgraded my CPU to 4930K, and I know I have to update the bios to the latest to use it,
but the thing is I have to use the ASUS converter to convert .ROM BIOS to .CAP BIOS,
right now my BIOS is still 1404 and I can't even boot up, so the only way to update it is using Flashback,
so I have to flashback the converter first and the bios will be updated to 2103 or something,
with 2103 BIOS I still can't boot up, and the conversion requires booting up to finish the conversion
which means I can't update my BIOS to the latest version by just using the Flashback.

Anyone has any thought on how am I gonna solve this problem?
Thank you.

Which ME version is your board running. Have a look at the CPU info page in UEFI. It will tell you there.

Also, try running s single memory module for a few days s- set the frequency low, like DDR3-1333. See how the board POSTs. Try toggling between Rampage Tweak mode 1 and 2 in the DRAM timing section also. POSt code 01 at restart can be memory related - when there is significant memory instability.

I'm having much the same problem with my new system. I can't actually tell what bios is currently installed but it sure doesn't like the i7-4820K I put in. I have tried to use flashback but I can't tell if it is even doing anything. It only flashes for 2 seconds. I really can't afford to buy a whole LGA 2011 CPU just to update the BIOS. I'm running a Rampage 4 Gene. Please help.......
Edit
Motherboard model:
Rampage IV Gene

UEFI Version:
Unknown but attempting to install 4403

Memory kit part number (s) and amount in GB:
G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133MHz 4x8GB CL 9-11-11-31
(I cant tell what the bios is doing with the ram because I haven't gotten into the BIOS setup yet)

GPU:
MSi Twin FrozrII GTX 560

SSD/HDDs/Optical drives:
1x WD Black 1.5TB

PSU:
Silverstone gold 1200W

USB Devices (model/version number):

CPU Cooler:
Coolermaster 212 Evo (upgraded with dual 140mm Xigmatek fans)

PC CASE:
BitFenix Prodigy M

Operating system: Microsoft Activated yes/no?
YES

Drivers Installed (include version):
NOT YET INSTALLED

Any third Party temp/voltage software installed:
NONE

System Overclocked (provide details)?
NO

Issue

Unable to POST, debug shows 00. CPU_LED is on always. Screen is blank. From reading other posts I at least have hope that the CPU is just fine but unrecognized by the current BIOS version. I have tried to use flashback but it does not seem to be doing anything.

Last 4 digits of the serial number should tell the UEFI version.

Likely you are not renaming the file properly or using a FAT32 formatted flash drive to perform the UEFI flash - can you confirm your methods?

Last 4 digits of serial number on box are 5514, not sure what this means, the latest BOIS offered online is 4403.
There is a small white sticker on the MB ending with BOG-3602, that at least sounds like a plausible version. The i7-4820K is listed as supported since BIOS 4310

I bought a brand new HP v221w 16GB flash drive, formatted it to FAT32 with windows quick format, copied Rampage-IV-Gene-ASUS-4403.CAP (not the .zip it comes in) onto it, renamed the file R4G.ROM per the user manual's instruction, inserted the flash drive into the white ROG connect port next to the ROG connect button, plugged in power but left system in standby (off), pressed and held ROG connect button until it started flashing, it flashed for only 2 seconds and then stopped.

first off , you renamed the bios incorrectly, it should of been renamed R4G.CAP. NOT R4G.ROM Your system was at Bios 3602 which means it was already converted to .CAP the .ROM was for the older bios configuration. Get the BRenamer software from the ASUS site in the Bois utilities menu and rename your 4403. bios properly:cool: It will flash you bios correctly after that.

See, this is why you never read the instruction book. The instructions are probably outdated or written by someone who is insane so just try your best to figure it out on your own and if that doesn't work ask a forum and the people who know will tell you. 🙂

It worked great! I renamed the file R4G.CAP and it spent ~1 minute flashing while it updated the BIOS. Thanks FireRX

It's actually a good idea to read the manual. It can be outdated on some things but not in everything. The manual was written prior to the boards switching to the EFI Capsule format. This is why ASUS has that renamer tool in the board's download section heh.

This is singular edge scenario as from now on all boards will be using that particular firmware format.

There are a number of things one should not do:

Thx Nodens, I tried flashing of 1404 and it worked, I'm running 4403 with 4930K now with no problem.
but one thing strange is when I boot up my computer, it re-boot itself like 3 times before i hear the beep and up and running, is it normal?

Ya I realized that, I was so stupid.

1) Using an ES CPU when one is not really supposed to have one....

2) Using a Xeon on a board that never claimed to support Xeons

3) Using both of the above or even a retail CPUwith no heatsink...

I wonder whether or not you should have that ES CPU in the first place. If it was purchased, that's actually illegal. Not something we endorse. Glad you purchased a retail CPU in the end 🙂

Hello, new member here. Hope this isn't a hijack as we have almost same situation.

I have just purchased my first new system in 10 years and I chose the 4930k and R4E. While I haven't received all my components yet to begin building, I have been reading on how to update my BIOS. Seems my motherboard has 4102 now so I know I need the CAP converter and I have found the tutorial on ASUS support page but I still have a few questions.

On my FAT32 formatted USB drive I need to extract the CAP Converter and newest BIOS both before attempting to update? Or do they need to be run separately?

Is it best to update prior to installing CPU? Just hook my R4E to the power supply and flash BIOS from USB?

I wasn't nervous about this build a few days ago but since then I've read of many instances of people having trouble getting the CPU and Board to play nice.

Thanks for any help,
Brad
