High Temps with Crosshair V Formula Z / AMD8350

Hi Guys,
I am getting disturbingly high idle temps with my 8350 using the Crosshair V Formula Z (55 degrees C @ idle).
Strange thing is I had this exact same chip in a Sabertooth 990 fx R2 and the idle temps were 33 degrees C. It is the same cooler and paste (Corsair H55 and Arctic Silver) in the same case with the same fans.
Could anyone shed some light on this for me, or give me a few things I could check.

Thanks,
Soul

Welcome to the forum.

This being what I assume is a new build I would be one of the following:
- the heat-sink is not securely attached to the CPU die?
- is there some protective plastic on the front of the heat-sink that may not of been removed?
- low fan RPMs or in this case not enough air flow through the heat ex -hanger/radiator?
- is there a pump on this; maybe something is plugging the system?

i had a similar problem with a liquid cooler that the in the pump the impella would jam and the pump still spinning would think everything was ok reaching 50-60 range only found out when it wouldnt boot up with the pump pluged in once id taken it apart to check i searched google only to find i could of returned it as was a faulty batch

Thanks guys, I am also thinking that my H55 may be at fault. I put the stock fan back on the radiator instead of my NZXT case fan which dropped the temps a little.

The heatsink is securely placed with no retail packaging still present.

Shouldn't there be a different note coming from the water block if the impeller is blocked?

Also I was thinking it may be my PSU is falling short it is a 650w XFX XXX Edition, but I am running 2x GTX560OC in SLI

Depends on fully blocked the system is or maybe the impeller is slipping off the motor shaft once it gets warm?

Just some info:

I have a Thermaltake Frio Advanced (air cooling) and my system during the summer months maxs out at 115 F (just using MS Office and doing some programming) which is 43.3 C (and I have the same CPU as you)

It may be that your CPU is just running "hotter" (I have to admit that yours is a bit high) but then again it would be good for others to chime in to tell your their temps.

I assume you are running a non-overclocked system right (as if you are OCing then the temps would be higher).

Also pull a graphics card (as I think you said you have two to rule out the PSU).

Keep us posted on your progress

There is no overclocking going on, I meticulously re applied the paste and cooler as thin as I could get it and my idle temps are now hovering around 37 degrees C. Now on an Intel chip I would be happy about that, but with the low thermal ceiling of this AMD I am definitely not...

Seems I may have been over-zealous with my Arctic Silver, the thin layer appears to have done the trick.
31C at idle and sub 60C in Prime95.

Scratch that, when gaming after about an hour I have hit 70C...

Are you still using the h55?

Are we back to the H55 or the stock cooler? I would expect the stock cooler to run much warmer . Again was hoping that others would chime in on temp but here are some more points

Stock AMD cooler was around 50 C idle
Thermaltake Frio the temps were well under 40 C idle
Thermaltake Frio playing COD2 the temps went to 55 C

Easy for me to say but go out and get another heat-sink seeming you saw temps around 30 C when using the Sabertooth.
