[HELP} Need Advice, Single Sata 3 HDD or Sata 2 HDD RAID 0 ?

Hi...

I have a Crucial M4 128Gb (as OS) and WDC Green 2TB as Data Drive. and I just bought another 2 WDC Green 2TB.

my mobo is Rampage IV extreme.
here is my setup now..

SATA: AHCI Mode

1. Crucial M4 128GB on SATA 3 port 0 (intel controller)
2. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 3 port 1 (intel controller)

3. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 3 port 0 (AsMedia controller)
4. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 3 port 1 (AsMedia controller)
-------------------------------------------------
and I want to try another plan like this one:
SATA: RAID Mode

1. 1. Crucial M4 128GB on SATA 3 port 0 (intel controller)
2. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 3 port 1 (intel controller)

3. 2x WDC Green 2TB on SATA 2 (Intel controller) RAID 0

I just curious, if I'm go with my plan.. will I get better performance?

thanks in advance.

It all depends what kind of performance you are talking about I guess. I have a couple of hard drives (mechanical) in RAID and a OS on SSD. I used RAID one for the redundancy of the RAID and not RAID 0 for speed.

Personally I would be terrified of RAID0 as data storage. One fail and it is all gone. All...

well... I see
so, am I good with 1st setting right now?

I just worried people talking something bad about AsMedia and Marvell controller. it's better be use the intel controller.

oh, one more thing hiviz.

I've got 93MB/s when try to copy some large files copy with that drive on SATA 3 AsMedia Controller.

and I've got plan C.

SATA: AHCI Mode

1. Crucial M4 128GB on SATA 3 port 0 (intel controller)
2. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 3 port 1 (intel controller)

3. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 2 port 0 (intel controller)
4. WDC Green 2TB on SATA 2 port 1 (intel controller)

am I good to go? will I got higher speed transfer files copy ?

That is pretty good.

Look folks do not like the ASmedia for a number of reasons. Me I tend to put all my hard drives on the Intel controller and my Blu Ray and DVD on the ASMeida.

But that is just me. You HDD transfer speeds are good, and why change what is working for you. 🙂

Most SATA 3 hardrives wont deliver more communication that than a SATA 2 port can handle. I have no difference on my SATA 3 HDD no matter what port it's hooked to. Same with 2x Veliciraptors in RAID0. Only SSD will use the full potential of SATA3. I've been running RAID0 for over 8 years and never had a failure. I'd trust it over a SSD anyday. Still use a storage drive just in case.

haha.. I just curious.
ok man, I got my vision now... right in front of my eyes..

I'll try to move my 2 WDC Green to SATA 2 intel controller, and see if I got at least 93MB/s. any higher than that.. that would be great since intell is the best controller.

thanks for your help man. 😄
