HDD slowing down PC

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask for help in the forums or not but here it goes :S

Since I bought my new Maximus Extreme IV, every time I'm using my HDD for copying files, installing software, etc. my PC runs slow, even moving the mouse breaks sometimes..

Seems strange, that never happened in my old rig, and it was way slower then my current.

My setup is:

CPU: i7 2600k @ 4.6ghz
MB: Maximus Extreme IV REV 3.0 (latest BIOS 1904)
PSU: Corsair hx1000w
GPU: 2x eVGA 580 SC SLI
HDD: 1x WD 120gb SATA Velociraptor 16MB (installed in a grey SATA 3.0 connector)
1x WD 1TB SATA III 64MB BLACK (installed in a red SATA 6.0 connector)
SB: X-fi Forte 7.1

Don't know what to do anymore, really hope some out there can point me into the right direction..

Thanks for the reply Sight.

Is it suppose to be on or off?

Look in SMART for warnings or anything unusual with something like CrystalDiskInfo
http://crystalmark.info/?lang=en

I noticed some of the newegg reviews mention they had funny clicks, so I would be weary. If you ever hear weird (not like the normal seek soft tick noise) clicks it can be the head moving back to read misses, usually a sign of impending doom.

One NewEgg guy mentioned a tool was at WD to test their drives.

Thanks for all the replys,

I've tested my two disks in both on WD Life Guard and CrystalDiskInfo, tests seems to be fine.

I'm going to update the drivers and disable index, I'll post the results in a few hours.

Good luck. I disabled indexing and tried numerous drivers along with AHCI controllers and had no luck. It got to the point where when my HDD was pretty much non-responsive when it had to access. It got noisy to the point where it just didn't sound right, above and beyond it's normal noise. I know the Caviar Black is loud to begin with, but something just didn't seem right. I bought an SSD and just RMA'ed my HDD and when I get the new one I'll just use it for media and documents. What's weird is I did several tests and they all came up perfect so something was amiss with the actual head or actuator (or whatever is responsible for writing and reading) because the platter (?)was in good shape.

Yeah same thing for me here, guess I'll have to replace my HDD...

I was more worried that the problem was my motherboard, 100 bucks is way better then 400 😛

How's your new SSD working out for ya? Is it worth it?

Thailand flooded recently, I think the WD factory flooded too. Maybe the wet weather before that messed them up.

SSD (various ones without bad bugs), or Hitachi 2TB/3TB (the slower silent versions), or Seagate Momentus XT 500G are the nicest drives atm, depending on what you need. Hitachi was sold so will be hard to identify them soon.
