GTX 680 PCIe 3.0 & Rampage Mobo

How many of you with Rampage 4 Extremes have had no problems running your GTX 680 at PCIe 3.0 via the "hack"

Negative experience is often up on the forum but not so much when something works so I thought it would make an interesting stat. Plus I´ve just ordered a DCII top and wondered what the chances were....:)

EDIT:

Manual hack: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?&m=1607292&mpage=1

Nvidia force enable: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3135/session/L3RpbWUvMTM0MDIyMzU2OC9zaWQvaDEzbE45...

EDIT 2: One person has found that running two cards initially broke 3.0 but changing the order of the cards in the Motherboard slots got it back up and running. Suspicion is that some GPU chips may better handle the extra load that the first card has to bear in the relationship with the CPU.....

Hi there

Not works well with me...
Apllied the hack like described in evga forum and installed the new Nvidia driver - "306.97-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql". The GPUZ was confirmed the applied patch, "PCIE 3.0X16", BUT... testing the muscle of the new bandwidth, in Battlefield 3, I have a bad experience with sudden falls of frames, 50 to 15 fps...
What might be the cause this?

Thanks!

PSoares can you verify that the issue only happens with GEN3 on? Like running the benchmark with GEN3 and GEN2 a couple times on each so we can say for sure if it's GEN3 related? If it is there's nothing you can do though.

I've seen about 20 samples which are very few indeed but all of them needed less voltage for mediocre overclocks

Well, that's 17 more than me! so interesting....I mean all things being equal you'd hope a new stepping and maturing processs yields better chips but maybe better overclockers is hoping too much:o

The power thing? The board will do its own thing and take as much as it needs across all the inlets...not much user input there!

PSoares...sorry to hear that....was the framerate fall linked to running the patch? Some system specs might help...

I've just got my second card and both are doing 3.0 sli fine.....:)

Sweet! We're waiting for some nice benching results now...

Yes, because happened after applying the patch!

My specs:

PSU - XFX XXX bLACK ED. 850W PRO

I dont have mencioned an important detail,
I always have the VGA card on the 4th slot, but Pcie 3.0 x16 too. This because need to have mems cooler - GSkill Turbulence II. If the card is in 1st slot, the cooler dont fit!

Could I clarify some of your system specs:

You have a C2 stepping processor I take it?

And you are using the 2 680s in slots 1 and 3?

Do you have a card in slot 2b?
Or in 2a, 4 or the pcie 1x slot if you have water blocks on the cards or risers or something.

And you didn't need to change any settings in windows, regarding power saving on the PCIe link, other than the registry settings to enable 3.0?

Thanks a lot.

I'll also add I tried enabling/disabling spread spectrum PCIe in BIOS without success.

Hi lettuce! Sorry, didn't mean to to rub salt in the wound just saying mine was working!:o

Yes, I have a C2 step CPU and the two 680s are in the first and third red slots no other slots occupied. At the moment they are stock air cooled. Power plan I run performance and never really touched PCIe link etc. Just manually changed registry for 3.0.

Not a problem at all, you are most welcome. 🙂

Haha you're not rubbing salt into the wound at all. I was just confirming your settings. It looks like the performance plan keeps the PCIe link state locked at 3.0 without lowering it to 2.0 and finally 1.1 for power saving when not in use. Edit: That's not correct according to GPUZ, I don't know what "PCI Express Link State Power Management" does.

I've got 3.0 working fine on the card in slot 1, flawlessly for several hours in stress and in games. But activating it on the second card cause a black screen and a reboot within a few minutes plus erratic frame rates. It's disappointing because the second card is the one I wanted to run at 3.0 speeds as I'd like to add more PCIe cards such as my RAID card, which I haven't got in while I'm fiddling with this, or move the 2nd GPU to slot 4, both of which would lower the link speed to 8x 2.0, which might be a bit lacking.

I've still got a few ideas left to try, such as swapping the cards, trying cards in different slots, trying one card only in slot 3 etc. I'm also going to take a look at CPU VCCSA voltage adjustment and PCIe CLK Skew and see if either have any effect.

Thanks again for your help.

Logic or manufacturing fixes etc are not disclosed unless they go public by a third party. The list you were reading was probably the disclosed stuff. (Do you have a url btw I'd like to see it:)). GEN3 compatibility won't be addressed with a stepping revision, you can be sure of that. Wait for IB-E for that.
