Gene Z - two of the three CHA FAN controllers stuck at 100%

Hello. I have a recent problem with the chassis fan controllers on a Maximus IV Gene-Z.

I'm using PWM fans. I have two connected to the two CPU fan controllers and their speed is variable by the bios settings.

I have 3 other PWM fans connected to CHA FAN 1 2 and 3. Only CHA FAN 3 is allowing the fan speed to be controlled. For example with CHA set to 60% in the bios, it will run at 700 RPM while 1 and 2 run at max 1500 RPM.

This has only recently changed to behave like this. Previously all chassis fan controllers set the speed according to the bios setting.

I've moved the fans around and the same thing happens. Each fan can be variably controlled, except when in CHA FAN 1 and 2.

I've updated the bios to the latest 0902, restored default settings, fully powered down from the wall for 5 mins. Not sure what else to try. Is this a common problem? Is my board dead?

Well tired of not having my computer finished I just bought a gene-z gen 3. With the same test environment (cpu/ram) the fan controllers work as expected, and cha fan 1 and 2 modify the speeds when on the silent setting, and others. 60% gives about 900 rpm, and silent gives about 1100. No fan control gives the same 1450ish to the rated 1500 fan speed.

So I still have this board which ASUS support claimed worked fine. I can't see how. They say they tested with a 3 pin fan, and since I've tested with 3 different model 3pin fans (120 and 140 fractal design, and the ones that came with my corsair h80) and they are stuck at max speed it seems a suspicious problem at best.

I am willing to put money on it that they did nothing mate. That the bloke is telling pork pies. All I can do is apologies for what is appalling support to a ASUS customer. And sincerely hope that it is not typical of Aussie ASUS.

The way forward would be to RMA again, but this time send video proof that the items work on the Gene board but not on the RIVE board. Demand your money back. I would.

Yeah, it's seeming that at best they tested incorrectly and are now making things up as they go along. And even if not, that it worked for them on one fan doesn't mean it isn't working for me on multiple fans for which it *should* work. A phone call at that point to gather more information would have been the correct choice, not to just throw it in the post without any followup. That they didn't take any screeshots, or even keep a worklog for the issue surprises me. I've worked for much smaller companies than ASUS and we track all our troubleshooting work on intranet/internet ticket tracking systems.

So now my intention is to send it back demanding that they show some proof that it is actually working, or honor the ASUS warranty. I've provided plenty of proof that it isn't working. The onus is on them now. I'll put together a nice lil' video showing the problem and lack of problem on my new board, and throw it up on youtube called "ASUS Australia Support" along with the email history. Ho ho.

It's times like these I miss my extended stays in America. They get customer service right 😕

frozenreads, quite late reply (i didn't get email notifications on the thread). Nope, never got to the bottom of the fan issue. Since I bought a new gen 3 my pc is fine. I was planning to return it to the retailer but never got around to it. The spare board went into a friends PC who only needed 1 of the CHA fans anyway so the restriction wasn't a problem. I'm still somewhat jaded by the experience I had with ASUS RMA over here. I'm surprised you had teh same over in TX, i was there for two months and was blown away by the quality of service compared to down here, tho that was all in sales!
