Frozen Time Clock in UEFI - The Fix

Is your motherboard suffering from the malady of a frozen time clock in UEFI?

If so try the following:

1) Reflash the latest UEFI, using EZ Flash 2 or USB BIOS flashback.

2) When the system POSTs, enter UEFI. Once in UEFI power down the motherboard. Keep the PSU attached and "on". Only the motherboard is powered off and in "standby". You will see the MB standby lights on (boards with start buttons onboard will be lit). Standby does not mean the board is actually running, standby means the board has power, but you have not pressed the power button to turn it on. Make sure the board is off before you go to the next step in this list. You will know if it is off because if you leave it for 5 seconds it should not POST~BOOT - this means it is in standby.



3) Clear CMOS (Clear RTC) for 10 seconds. This will clear the Management Engine.

4) Power up the system, enter UEFI, set the clock and then save and exit.

5) Update MEI driver to Version 9.5.14.1724 in the OS.









6 )Carry on using the system as normal.

The above steps should fix the issue.

Just thought I would pop on real quick to let anyone who's interested know that the new bios and subsequent CMOS reset has done the trick and is working well so far. Granted, it's only been a couple of days but I will keep posting at weekly intervals to update my clocks status. Thanks ROG for sticking with us.

I am getting the same blue screen. My computer has never crashed untill i did the latest bios update, 1603. I will try previous bios and let you all know if that fixes it. I have a maximus 6 extreme, 4770k

Asus Z87 MOBO Frozen Bios Clock Issue
Can someone please inform me is this an issue that occurs only when any kind of overclocking is done.
This includes enabling XMP profiles of RAM that has XMP feature.
In other words is there anybody out there who has had frozen clock issue where no overclocking was done.

Did you follow all of the steps in the first post of this thread? Such as clearing CMOS after the flash with standby power applied to the board?

Hi, first post and I feel abit stupid for asking this but in your "guide" you say press the cmos key 10s.
I have the Maximus VI Hero and as far as I can see there is only a jumper, so I guess my question is:
how do I clear my cmos? Do I move the jumper and let it stay there for 10s or?

Welcome to the ROG forums, Jimirix.

Yes, use the CLEAR RTC jumper. If you look closely, you'll see that the jumper cap is on pins 1 & 2. What you need to do is move that jumper cap to pins 2 & 3 for 10 seconds. Then move the cap back to pins 1 & 2.

OK so I've now seen the issue reappear a couple of times and without saving/loading any profiles so it doesn't seem to be related to profiles saving/loading.

What I've done now when I had the issue again was to adjust voltages trying to find a stable overclock. Unfortunately I still haven't been able to find out exactly when and what it is that will cause the clock to freeze, only that it happens from time to time when you're repeatedly entering UEFI adjusting the voltages and then save and exit out of UEFI again.

Like I said before I hope you guys are able to eventually pinpoint this issue and address it permanently in a UEFI upgrade because it's a bit annoying having to go through the steps to "un-freeze" the clock whenever needed.

Hello, I have a Maximus Hero VI and I'm having the frozen clock issue.

I have applied the fix Rava show us, but after a time the issue come back. Is there any permanent solution?

Is very annoying to apply the fix every time the clock freezes. I think I should bring back the motherboard, Asus has had enough time to solve the problem and they didn't it.
