Formula IV owner. Some questions

Firstly, just want to say how much I love this board!

Anyway, is there no way to get the voltage to drop at idle when using bclk strap of 125 on I7 3820? It would be nice to reduce power use when not needed. If not, then no worries.

Does the qreset button completely reset/clear cmos? Or is there some way to do this without opening the case? I know there is a clear cmos button at back, but does this completely clear everything and basically reset to fresh state, including all profiles, etc?

After a bios flash I usually prefer to start from scratch, but would love to do that without opening case.

And for OCing, it seems like I can fairly easily get to 4.75 with less than 1.4V, but was really hoping to get to 5GHz. So far, in my attempts though, that seems to require more than 1.5V, and gets way too hot. What other voltages/setttings should I be adjusting apart from vcore to push above 4.75GHz.

Am currently not pushing memory at all while trying this OC, as want to find cpu limits first.

I am not overly worried about longevity of the CPU, but I am concerned with longevity of the board - what are things I should absolutely avoid to make sure the board lasts for years?

Well, I got 4.75GHz (mem at 2000 - 10-10-10-30-1t @ 1.425V) seemingly stable at 1.38V. Temps on core 0 peaked at 74 but the other 3 didn't break 70C.

I say I have it "seemingly" stable, as I do have one outstanding issue. Resuming from sleep does not seem to work. Just hangs. From cold boot, works fine, under load it works fine, but resume from sleep hangs it.

Got so many tweaks active it would be hard to list them all.

Got a number of things I could try tonight such as lowering memory speed, disabling thermal monitor, etc, and trying to find cause. Just thought I would mention it in case someone had similar issue and had a good suggestion.

As for settings which could potentially harm board, I have left all thermal and current protection settings on. While am happy to push the system a bit, I don't want to run it right at it's limits.

Hope I find the cause of sleep problem and find my max memory OC by Friday, as I would love to actually play some games properly this weekend 🙂

Make sure to keep it cool... for overclockers heat is usually that damages PC hardware lol... Or else they wouldn't have programs and gadgets to check for temperature... lol After all if you purchase expensive hardwares it's gonna get more expensive if heat damages it like a mustang automotive... breaks down easily if the carberator heats up doesnt it?

And I heard the 1305 would probably stable the motherboard, but I noticed a lot of boards uses 1305 which is strange I heard Maximus-Z gene used 1305 but I'd thought it's only for Rampage... well technically it's for CPU...

Q reset I believe for RIVE it's to switch BIOS... so basically you have 2 CMOS and if you press Q reset it would reset to the default CMOS.. but I don't know the difference in Rampage Formula IV and Rampage IV extreme... I recall in BIOS you have an option of 7 CMOS to preset but when I pressed the Q reset for RIVE it forced to the default CMOS... instead of my custom made CMOS... (basically I just tweaked memory from 1300mhz to 1600mhz... but Kingston 8GB kit can go up to 2400mhz... ) Since I have the same CPU as you... I don't want to overclock the CPU... unless it's like i7-3960X wish it wasn't overpriced at $1300.00 lol

Well you can flash a BIOS from a website... http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/

I did this with RoG Connect... but like I said I don't know the difference between Rampage Formula IV...

I do do my best to keep it cool 🙂

Next time I flash BIOS will use that method - love little innovations like that 🙂

Anyway, have back off my OC for now. I figured out the reason it wouldn't start from sleep - it didn't like jumping straight to 4.75 when resuming form sleep. If I set the CPU ratio to like 30 (giving 3.75) and used turbo multi of 38 it would start up OK.

Anyway, until next BIOS released am sticking with my current settings of 4.575 Core at 1.34V, 2270 memory at 11-11-11-30-1t at 1.475. This is using bclk 106.XX and no strap. This is so can use C1E to reduce idle volts.

Not that I really need to push any higher than this, but I will play with any new BIOS to see if 5GHz becomes possible with reasonable volts.

There is a way to drop the voltage it is called negative offset. Instead of using the + sign when keying in the amount of offset you wish to apply key in - values.

Cheers

Oh, I know I can set lower volts 🙂

The 3820 simply won't reach decent clocks with decent volts on this board. Seen forum postings where people have gotten the same 3820 at higher clocks and lower volts on a Sabertooth than on a Formula - wish I could find the forum now 😞

And using bclk strap on 3820 prevents C1E working so idle voltage will not drop, even if speedstep is working

LOL sorry mate I misread your question then. Need more coffee.

And it is on overclockers.net I think.

Look it is all about cooling and the nature of the individual CPU - sometimes you get lucky sometimes not. 🙂

Yeah, I know each chip is different, as is each board, but in all my reading, can't recall one person with 3820 and Formula/Extreme getting decent clocks with decent volts.

I just get the impression that this combination isn't as good as it should be.

Small part of me is considering just getting a 3930K. Had I known that I would have to disable most pretty much all power saving features on 3820 to get a decent clock, I probably would have just gone 3930K to start.

Decisions...

Maybe should just wait for next BIOS and see what that brings.

On that note, do the Formula and Extreme use the same BIOS?

Nope they are different due to the amount of ram slots and the power management.

I get better RAM clocking on the Formula by the way.

Yeah, I got no issues with ram clocking!

The samsung Green is rated for 1600 11-11-11-28-1t at 1.35V, but currently got it up to 2270 at the same timings with 1.475V. Can possibly even drop the voltage a bit on that.

Am sure if I could run at base 100 bclk, I could get them running at 2400.

PS - any way to stop the captcha each and every single time I want to post something? Getting annoying.
