For anyone who has a 4790k running hot, here is the fix that worked for me

I am not a novice and this is not my second post. Miserable site made me change my user name when i registered a new mobo.
I just put together a new rig with a maximus VII formula and was pulling my teeth out trying to figure out why my new devil's canyon was hitting 80c at stock clocks and a fixed vcore.

I had to manually input the turbo watts as asus bios auto setting is WAY out of line for this cpu. photo is below and cured my issues. fully stressed for 1 hour on an older corsair h80 vcore at 1.150 volts 4.6 ghz high tems of 64-69c now. Also vcore was jumping up even though i had llc disabled. I had to set the FIVR to balanced to get rid of that. The values are CORRECT asus for some reason multiplies whatever you put in the field by 8X!

Credit to koroziv for posting this on the intel forum! TY:D

hope this helps anyone who needs it. & Asus...you need to fix your bios for this cpu. Posted all over the net....

You must be great at mathematics. I think it is a very important find for all of us with z97 boards. This information did not exist before you realized it. Ever watch a beautiful mind? lol ot....

Makes no sense why they would use a multiplier in a watt field....... @ASUS any thoughts on this? You can fry your chip with your auto settings and especially when we read an article from an intel employee that tells us what watts to use and we input them expecting them to be correct and the bios translates them into much higher UNSTABLE numbers.

Awesome job on finding this out, but it doesn't work for me (no temp reduction). I even have multicore enhancement disabled in the bios.

I have the latest bios (version 2801) and AI Suite 3 installed (i have a Front Panel and it needs to be installed for the front panel to function).

Any idea what's happening?

P.S. My mobo is Maximus VII Formula, my room temperature at the time of testing is 75F and i have 5 case fans (1x 120mm Rear, 1x 140mm Top, 1x 120mm Front, 2x 140mm Bottom).)

Hi All

Monitoring this Topic. For now i just used some of this instructions for lower temps. Hope ASUS listen to you guys and release a New Bios

This is one thing i hate about asus. After they release a 300$+ mobo they update the bios for about 6 months then you are sol. Gigabyte on the other hand will actually make and post beta bios specific to your situation but i do not like Gigabyte boards. So thats when we start modifying our own bios. Look at there last bios release date and look at the number of issues in the forum. Hate to be a downer but i would not hold my breath for a new bios update....

I can only hope that you don't use the intel stock cpu cooler; check if it is properly seated on the cpu. Also read a little on the intel forum, links on first page in this thread, more things explained over there. At the moment I use default settings (only xmp for ram and custom fan profile) and it is only 3-10 celsius above the values I get changing values in bios. I don't play games so much any more, and I got bored to change all the crap after every bios update. I mean around 30 celsius in idle and around 60 celsius while gaming (bf4); room temp is 27-30 celsius, very hot here and can't stand the AC always on.

Yes i do use the stock cooler; im looking to get a better one, but i most of the ones im finding wont fit on the mobo.

Since using these settings, i've noticed something very troublesome. The CPU is running at turbo speeds all the time. It never goes down, even though SpeedStep and C-States are enabled in the bios. How can i fix this?

I also had to disable hyperthreading because it was boosting the heat.

Find attached my CPU-Z results.

Hello Ruok2bu

Try setting the windows power plan to balanced.

Awesome, that fixed it. Thanks!

You're welcome !

If you want the voltage to throttle down you will have to use adaptive or offset.
