Fomula VI: How to setup 2nd and 3rd SSD in RAID0?

Well, I have a Samsung 840PRO 512MB which I have my OS on but I also have 2 identical SSD at 256BG which I wanna run in RAID0.

Question is, how do I do that? I tried changing the S-ATA setting from AHCI to RAID so I can configer the RAID during boot (Ctrl+I) and then boot and make a RAID0 from the SSD I wanted but if I try to startup now, I get a crash when I get to the log-in picture. I try after to change the S-ATA back to AHCI mode but then just see one of the SSD I setup to be RAID0 in Windows.

So, how can I do this proper? I wanna use my Samsung 840 PRO as my main disk and just make a RAID0 of the two other.

You will need to do a reinstall of Windows mate. 1: Set your SATA to RAID and then install Windows on the single drive. 2: Reboot, Ctrl+I to setup the RAID and choose the 2 drives and you should be good to go 🙂

I did this with the 2 drives (840 evo 250gb) I bought for black friday. Here is what I did.

  • Make sure the drives are on sata 0 and 1
  • Went into UEFI set to raid, F10 and reboot
  • Created my volume with Intel's tool
  • Let it fail to boot, went back into the UEFI
  • Changed back to ACHI and made sure my OS drive was set as boot.
  • Rebooted
  • Formatted and created drive in windows disk management
  • Done
Sounds like you are on the right track.

Still didnt work, if I have RAID activated I get a crash when it tried to load Windows (even if I have the the right boot priority)

The motherboard have 10 6Gb/s SATA Ports , 6 x SATA 6Gb/s ports controlled by Intel Z87 Chipset and 4x SATA 6 Gb/s ports controlled by ASMedia ASM 1061 Chipset.

I have seen that Raid0, even with SSD increase the performance.

Thanks for the reply!

Okey, I have my OS on sata 0 (Samsung 840 Pro) and my 2nd and 3rd disk (which I wanna raid) at sata 1 and 2. So I should change my 840 Pro with my third disk so that my RAID disk are pared with sata 0 and 1 ?

BTW, the 840Pro disk rockes! Here is a comparison between my 840 Pro and my other Samsung SSD.

Indeed it does, so please use the native Intel ports.

Native intel? Meaning the 6 x SATA 6Gb/s Intel Z87 Chipset? I already have all my SSD installed there. My 840PRO is in Channel 1, and my 2 identical 256GB Samsung disc are in Chanel 3 & 4.

Do I need to change my 840PRO to the ASMedia ASM S-ata controller while I have RAID activated in Intel Z87?

Meaning NON-RAID HDD/SSD will not work in a controller which is set for RAID?

Keep your 840 on the Intel port, ASMedia ports are for Data Drives/Optical Drives and not OS Drives.

You already have Windows Installed with the Intel SATA ports set to RAID yes? if yes, then follow my directions above and you'll be Golden 🙂
