Extremely high idle temps

Hi I'm new to the forums. I have an Asus Rampage IV Extreme (2011) and an i7 3930k proc. Both the cpu and memory are not overclocked. (cpu-z shows clock at 3.5ghz with turbo core turned on) I'll try to make this post as short and as accurate as possible. Roughly 3 weeks ago, I updated my bios from 3602 to 4701 as I was planning on buying an i7 4930k cpu, and bios 4701 apparently supports all of the IB-E chips. The update went fine until I started noticing the cpu temp monitor was getting stuck at 79.0c. By getting stuck, I mean after I power on my computer, the temp rises and then stops at 79.0c exactly. I then tried updating the bios to 4802, but the temps stay the same.

Physically, the system is cool. The only heat I'm feeling is coming out the back exhaust of my GTX 780 graphics cards (the dual fan ones from EVGA). I have a Corsair H100 liquid cooler installed in a HAF 932 full tower with plenty of fans. The cooler feels fine, and doesn't seem to show any indication its failing either. For giggles, I even cleaned off the old thermal grease and reapplied a fresh coating. I ran Core Temp 1.0 RC6 and RealTemps in windows and both register idle temps ranging from 75c to 89c across all 6 cores.

I've tried disabling turbo core as well, but I'm getting the same temps regardless. I would have tried doing a bios flashback, but I forgot to save my old bios to a flash drive. (never thought I'd need to...lesson learned...) Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Antec 1200 PSU

I appreciate the help from everyone on this thread. When I get home tonight I'll try and reseat the cooler. I did go back to 4802 bios, but might see if I can flash it back to 4403 instead. On a whim, I decided to pick up a CM Nepton 280L cooler as a backup. I'll get some screenies up as soon as I can tonight.

joke aside: if you by any chance live in Australia then i guess you better stop running your pc. it's quite burning temperature out there 😄

Nice looking cooler I have not used it myself yet. Please do post back how things go I would be very interested to see what difference the cooler is going to make.

We don't know that. The H100 is powered by a molex connetion to your PSU. I'm sorry but I need to ask, are you certain it's connected? There is a tach lead also from the H100 that connects to a motherboard fan header. Normally it is connected to CPU_FAN if you are connecting the H100's fans to the H100 block itself. What is the pump showing for RPM? It should be in the 2000 neighborhood. If it is not, then the pump may indeed be failing or has already failed.

I'm almost certain that the pump is connected properly, but I'll check again. I'd love it if that's what was causing this all along. 🙂 When I last checked yesterday, the BIOS showed an rpm readout ranging from 2200 to 2400 max. I'll update everyone once I get home tonight.

i also told you to check the temperature from bios.

Got home tonight and reseated the cpu cooler, and verified that the molex cable is plugged in properly. I managed to take some pics (listed below) of my less than savory wiring job.








I also managed to get some pics idle temp readings, and task/resource manager

Yeah I had mentioned at the beginning of the thread that the temp readout was or seemed to be stuck at 79.0c. I've added a pic of that down below. Would you say that the MB and PCH readouts are typical or are those also higher than normal?

pch & mobo temperature seems OK.

hmm, thats very high man, something wrong there,
should see those temps under load not idle........
so what temp are you getting idle - load ?
either the cooler is not working properly or
motherboard not reading temp properly, I would
personally think the corsair cooler is not working properly.
