Error 55 with Maximus VI Hero and 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance Pro

Hi,

I just built my new PC with a Maximus VI Hero and 2x4 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro memory (CMY8GX3M2A1866C9R), but I get error 55 (no memory installed) when I try to boot up 😞

I have installed the memory in the two red slots (A1 and B1), as suggested in the manual.

What should I try first to fix the problem? Should I try swap them to the black slots?

The other components in my PC are, if necessary:
i7-4770k, Corsair AX860, Corsair H100i cooler, Gigabyte 780 Ti OC, Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB, Corsair 750D case.

I would really appreciate some help, thanks 🙂

Did you install the memory with the power to the board switched off? then power on the board and clear your cmos see if it boot to bios.
the red dimm slots are the correct slots for dual channel.

Many thanks for your replies 🙂

I just tried to put a single memory stick into A1, which didn't work (same error 55). Then I tried in B1, again same error.

Then I tried to put the other memory stick of the set into A1. After powering up the q-code display cycled through some numbers, and then it seemed like the PC shut down, but then it turned on by itself again - and it cycled through some numbers on the q-code display again and it ended up on showing A2, and it said "New CPU installed! Please enter Setup to configure your system. Press F1 to run setup" on the screen.

I pressed F1, didn't change anything, I just exited the bios. Now it says AE on the q-code display (still only one stick in A1), but it keeps booting straight into the bios. It does seem to detect the dvd drive and the ssd.

What do you think the next step is for me?

Ok.

So to recap. You have Stick A and Stick B.
1. System fails to post when you use Stick A in the DIMM_A1 slot or the DIMM_B1 slot.
2. System successfully posts when you use Stick B in the DIMM_A1 slot or the DIMM_B1 slot.

If that is the case, it suggests that Stick A is defective. So looks like you will have to RMA the kit back to Corsair.

Many thanks.

That is correct 🙂

The only thing I find a little odd is that it boots directly into the BIOS (with the working stick "B")? I would have expected it to just say no operating system installed or something similar.

As an addition to my previous post I tried to move the memory stick that worked in A1 over to B1 - this also worked (the debug led cycling through numbers and then ending up at AE). Still boots directly into bios through (at the AI Overclock tuner setting) - I'm not sure if that is what it is supposed to do?

Could this mean that one of the memory sticks is defective?

The default speed of the memory is set to 1333MHz.

Please remove your CPU and check the socket for bent pins. Now refit your CPU and be very sure to follow the vendors guide to tightening your Cooler. What is most likely happening is that your cooler is over tightened on one corner.

How could that explain that one of the sticks works in both slots, and the other stick doesn't work in either of them?

I didn't see any bent pins when I checked before installing the cpu.

I was very careful when installing the cooler, tightening the bolts in a cross-pattern and I didn't tighten the screws more than what I could achieve by hand.

Just trying to be sure that it is necessary to reinstall the cpu and cooler 🙂

If there is a pin off a pad then it can and does happen. 🙂

If you have used Memtest86+ as per the guide in my sig to test your sticks of ram, then you will know if you have a dead stick or memory.
