Do I need to change this.

Hello ROG world

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

The specs to my new machine (still in the shop):

R4E

Intel Core i7-3970X 3.50GHz

Thermaltake 2.0 extreme

2x Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB

MSI GTX 690

Dell UltraSharp U2711 2560 x 1440 Resolution

2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-15000 C10 1866MHz XMP Quad Channel Kit CMZ32GX3M4X1866C10

As a bit of background this build was originally with the sabertooth mb but due to an issue with a cooler
(which I wont name here but some will surely guess), my supplier kindly agreed to swap cooler and mb
(which entailed a new case as well). So I am a little reluctant to give them any more grief as to date they
have given A1 customer support.

My problem is on reading Arne's excellent guide to ram, on this forum (wish I found it earlier), that the ram I have ordered is probably not the right one on two counts at least:

1) Its 2 kits. I was unaware of this binning scenario and kits of 8x8 were not on suppliers lists (I am not sure if the supplier should have worked this out).

2) R4E and vengence dont get on apparently.

Originally this ram was for sabertooth but on using corsairs ram finder this ram is on the list so I didn't change it.
Now I read this post and need some advice. Initially I don't intend to oc this rig (but who knows the more speed you get the more you want) but I do want full speed on components I have, especially the ram.

As you can tell I am trying to drag myself into the 21st century here so any advice as to settings, bios revisions or the need to change the ram would be great. As I have said the rig is still in shop and I don't know what bios etc. it has. I am trying to be prepared here as I am not sure if the supplier will do any more updates as the last one didn't go well.

I also need a better understanding of what frequency I should be running with 64gb. Should I use XMP or not.

Thanks for being here.

If you have the option, then get other ram. If you´re stuck with them, you can simply try. Try xmp or try entering manual values, alternatively try loosening the timings a notch. And if it doesn´t work, sell the ram as "like new" on eBay or the likes, and you´ve got downpayment for a new kit.
Start with Memtest on your ram.

You will prob have to set the latencies approx. 12% higher (10 -> 11, 11 -> 12, 30 -> 33 for example), add approx. 0.05V, and maybe set the speed one notch slower. Don't even bother trying XMP, use manual.
Set VCCSA 1.225V for starters.
Also, we are now experimenting W/trying clock gen filter 20uF, but whether or not this helps is as yet unknown. GL.

Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.

Thanks for quick replies.

I hope I am not stuck with it. I'm probably wrong but that sounds like buying expensive kit and slowing it down. If that's so it is not what I am after. I am drafting an email to suppliers with evidence gained so far. Can someone suggest an 8x8 kit of the right frequency that will get the best from this board, processor and ram. I am trying to fathom this overclocking lingo but as yet it is still a bit of a foreign language.
So I don't want to do much adjusting, but some leeway for future could be good.

I am sorry these are such nooby questions I tried G.SKIll's configurator but that was even less helpful than corsair's.

By the way blade if you do get H100i any time soon DO NOT UPDATE FIRMWARE and have a long look on corsair forum under cooling first.

Getting Vengeance RAM to work with the RIVE is kinda a hit or miss. Some people get it to work, some don't. And what you're saying is true, you are slowing down a rather expensive kit. If you paid for the speed, you're entitled to enjoying. That's my philosophy. So save yourself the headaches, time and money and ask your supplier to change the RAM. But if you can't, then do as Tenblade mentioned.

Just out of curiosity, your supplier is just assembling your PC? Or will he install Windows and all that stuff?

Hey Chino
Yea just the assembly (didn't trust myself with 2011 tiny pins too cac handed and wanted some warranty).
Any suggestions as to a kit to ask for they dont have any 8x8 on their website.

In that case, please tell them to turn on the system for a test run before handing it over to you. The 3970X is a rather new processor and the RIVE most probably won't support it without a BIOS update. I don't remember if you can flash the RIVE's BIOS without a processor. So better to have them look into it since they can always swap an older CPU in, update the BIOS and swap it back out. 😉

What's your budget for the RAM?

Yes you can it's called the "USB BIOS flashback," 3.10.5 in the manual, and on a sticky. However, you might have to do the CAP converter first, and that requires a CPU. So you update to BIOS 1404 without the CPU:
Asus Rampage IV Extreme BIOS 1404

Then put your CPU in, then do the CAP converter from BIOS utility as in the vid, then update to latest BIOS via any method.

Thanks for that I will run it past them.

The 2 set of vengance was to cost £309.96 I could probably go to £400
