Delidded Devil's Canyon over 10C Drop In Temps!

Hi everyone,

I came from a sandy bridge that never went over 63c @ 4.6Ghz so when i just upgraded i was not happy with the temps. I watched a few videos and decided no way am i putting my chip in a vice and striking hit with a freaking hammer! I also watched what hell people went through with a razor. So i chose the razor method and the lid came off like butter! 5 minutes and very little pressure with a box of my grandfathers razors that are over twenty years old! Love ya pop! I was a nervous wreck even though it separated with ease. Not a scratch on the chip.

I am now below my sandy's temps! I used the newer Cool Laboratory's Liquid Ultra which is a breeze compared to liquid pro! Spread so easy after watching videos of the pro version i was very happy. all cores enhanced to run at 4.4 and it stays at 59C! I dropped 11c. I used it on both the cores and the heat sink as it is copper. my idle temps are getting lower as i type this. Right now my lowest core is 22c with c7 state disabled @ 1.155 volts 4.6ghz. test below were enhanced cores 4.4 max turbo at 1.500 volts. both cpu-z & core temp show a little higher? And i heard core temp reads high on rog boards.

If anyone here is on the edge thinking about deliding, GO FOR IT! just take your time and use as little of liquid ultra as you possibly can. 1 micro drop covered the whole core under the lid. I am as happy as a pig in....

Tomorrow i will see how much i can squeeze out of this cpu. TIM on cpu looked like arctic silver! Felt like rubber, very weird.

I am a little lost on the procedure. Is this the correct?

1. delid
2. clean chip & and both sides of lid including black sealer on die and lid
3. put on liq ultra on die
4. DO NOT put the lid back on
5. put chip in socket
7 place and hold lid on chip
8 lock lid down while holding it.

a little more accurate... and watch some videos on you tube for practice. SEE MY PHOTO ABOVE ...do not go in far with the razor where the caps are.... other sides are ok... this only applies to devil's canyon i believe...

Ty for helping me understand. I will look at some vids. I originally was thinking about just using liq ultra and not delidding. My temps are already pretty good. Does delidding change your warranty?

Glad i could help. Yes it does void you CPU warranty but if you really had an issue with the CPU you could just glue the cap back on. Very rare that a CPU goes bad unless you overvolt it to death or overheat it. If you do it post some photos... I was borderline also but now i am glad i did it. no matter what you use for a tim on the cooler there will always be that cheap Intel crap on the die.

Good job with the delidding, digmeahole1. Liquid metal ultra works at least as good as Pro - application is a matter of personal preference.

That is also a VERY good 4790K if it's stable at 4.6 with 1.155Vcore. Another way to look at the 10C temperature drop is that there are now more watts available for higher overclocking. A 4790K that good could get in to the 5.0GHz range on a small AIO water cooler. If you try it, though, watch the temperatures closely.

TY. I was wondering where i stood with the "silicone lottery" as there is that that much info on this subject.... I have yet to push it past 59c and 4.6 but i intend to. Just enjoying the cool temps for now 🙂 Gaming for the first time with FC4 at ultra with everything maxed out and top temp was 50c.

All CPUs are different. The trouble with "what's the max it can take" is that you don't know the answer until it's too late. Sudden catastrophic failure doesn't give time to even check the voltage monitor.

That said, I have had no trouble with a 4790K at up to 1.4 volts, but that's delidded and with a large custom water loop. When trying for competitive benchmarks, I run upwards of 1.5 volts and temperatures often go over 85C for a few minutes. That's not the sudden death point, but ... After several such sessions, I can tell that the CPU takes more voltage for the same clock rate to be stable. It's to the point now that i'll need a new 4790K next month. That's a prime example of degradation. All CPU families have a voltage range where their life is shortened and/or performance gets worse. That voltage and the amount of degradation that happens is also a function of temperature - high temperature and high voltage are a bad combination.

How much degradation a CPU can take depends on the life you want out of it. Keeping voltage below 1.35, temperatures below 60C (or at least not exceeding those for more than a few minutes a day) should get all the life you might want. An OC that needs 1.4 volts and goes over 70C in every game might be more fun for a year or two. That's what is up to you.

As Jeff has mentioned, degradation is the real killer.

The DC range is not really old enough for enough samples to be significant as far as excess 24/7 voltages are concerned.

1.5v+ is cconsidered as a no go zone by many, unless you know what you are doing. For a daily driver, IMO you would want to stay under 1.35 to 1.4v max in conjunction with a high performance cooling solution.

My system was mainly setup to be quiet an reliable. Its currently summer down here in Australia however my pc runs very quiet and cpu temps stay under 55C when gaming.
