Crosshair V weird issues (bugs?) please help

Hi guys,

Just upgraded yesterday from the msi 890fxa-gd70, and now that I have all the settings about where I want them I have these few questions I couldnt figure out or find in the manual or bios myself. After day 1 I can say this was a pain to get stable ON STOCK no OC settings (bios and windows reinstall) lol But its day 2 now and can see this is an AWESOME board now that I got most of it worked out. Cant wait to Overclock, heard stories of msi people switching to this board and getting way higher overclocks Im assuming due to the bad vrms in the msi.

Here are my issues, the top two are my most irritating ones from most irritating being #1. I wrote this stuff down so I could just put it in one topic rather than flood a forum with several topics, thanks for reading.

1: Bus speed (fsb/ht) ALWAYS goes up one point higher than I set it, AMD is obviously 200 stock, but when left in auto in windows showed up as 201, set manually to 200, and still went to 201, I run an overclock 24/7 and find it irritating, loaded 230 which was my old setting and sure enough went to 231, I can set this down to 229 if I want 230 but dont think I should have too, is this a bios update issue or something I need to set in the current 705 build?

2: When I shut it down the OC lights at the bottom light up, manual says its so I know there is power to the board, cool, but I have an antec kuhler 920 and it gets power/signal from the usb header down there by the lights and the usb header has power to turn on the antec logo light on my cooler when computer is off, seems to be just the light since the pump feels off but a concern.

3. manual seemed unclear but can I plug a usb 2.0 header plug into the usb 3.0 one if I use the blue adapter thats in the package? I have 2 usb 2.0 mobo connectors for the case front panel alone plus I have my antec cpu cooler that needs one row (not a double one). Currently I have one front panel connector disconnected but thats a little issue at the moment.

4: I was getting intermittent fan errors while at post causing me to have to enter the bios. I have a feeling the antec kuhler pump was spooling up and the mobo cought it below the 600rpm indicator, I have cpu fan speed control disabled so its 100% power, windows interface for antec tool shows pump working correctly too. Should I just leave the monitoring off or should I set to 100rpm or whatever the min is, at 500rpm it set the warning a few times also.

5: When going from stock settings to an overclock setting upon hitting f10 and yes the whole mobo shut off including fans then powered up and had the overclocked settings activated, is this to be expected? The msi rarely did that and when it did it was right before the msi vrm/nb area smoked, so im a little overcautious on this lol. I changed cpu mult, cpu bus speed, cpu-nb freq, ram timings, and some power settings

6: Lastly and more of an observation than concern; I notice that the NB/vrm heatsink gets warmer to the touch than the msi mobo I had and since there isnt a built in temp sensor I figured I should ask if this is because the metal used by asus is better at transfering heat or should I get a temp sensor on there asap for overclocking? Where would be a good spot to put a sensor in that area? I want to get those temp probes and plug them into the mobo. For now I set the temp protection to 80C from stock 90C, I just wonder how the mobo knows the temp if we cant see it in windows 🙂

7: Just to be sure, the asus driver cd had realtek audio drivers which I didnt install, I installed the creative soundblaster one on the Cd, under windows device manager I didnt see any unknown devices except the usb controller which Im gonna install right now since I just saw that lol. Im good right on the sound drivers?

8: I disables the ASmedia sata controller because I hated the post screen since Im not using it, but I left the ASmedia usb 3.0 enabled, will that cause any issues with usb 3.0 not working correctly? currently dont have any usb3.0 devices but the ports work 🙂 I have my 2 hard drives and sata dvd drive all on the SB sata controller (side one)

If you read all that THANKS for attempting to help me out!! I appriciate it 🙂

THIS COULD BE DUE TO YOUR POWER SUPPLY PUTTING OUT A BIT MORE VOLTAGE not a problem its common

NOT A PROBLEM BUT BE CERTAIN THE PUMP IS NOT RUNNING screw driver to ear test if you hear the motor its running

3. manual seemed unclear but can I plug a usb 2.0 header plug into the usb 3.0 one if I use the blue adapter thats in the package? I have 2 usb 2.0 mobo connectors for the case front panel alone plus I have my antec cpu cooler that needs one row (not a double one). Currently I have one front panel connector disconnected but thats a little issue at the moment. YES they are backward compatible

IF THE COOLER IS PLUGGED INTO THE CPU FAN POWER/SENSOR CIRCUIT DEFINATELY but not familliar with antec cooling IF THE BOARD DETECTS A HEAVY LOAD IT WILL DEFAULT TO FAN ERROR

5: When going from stock settings to an overclock setting upon hitting f10 and yes the whole mobo shut off including fans then powered up and had the overclocked settings activated, is this to be expected? YES IT IS REBURNING THE CMOS DATA this is common on ASUS boards
For now I set the temp protection to 80C from stock 90C, I just wonder how the mobo knows the temp if we cant see it in windows 🙂 YES BETTER HEAT TRANSFER AND MORE HEAT PRODUCED allot of us are inquiring as to why there is no NB/SB temp readouts in bios as they are obviously monitored

IF YOU'RE RUNNING USB SOUND YOURE OK disable the onboard sound in bios IF YOU PLAN TO USE THE ON BOARD INSTALL THE DRIVERS

8: I disables the ASmedia sata controller because I hated the post screen since Im not using it, but I left the ASmedia usb 3.0 enabled, will that cause any issues with usb 3.0 not working correctly? currently dont have any usb3.0 devices but the ports work 🙂 I have my 2 hard drives and sata dvd drive all on the SB sata controller (side one) Dont know Good One for Raja

Man thanks a bunch, that gave me some peace of mind.

About the fan issue going off what you said maybe it is just putting a bit of a load at startup or because of the higher load starts spinning slower than what the mobo expects and then throws that code? The pump and 2 120mm fans are how its set oem (cpu can 3pin and usb header plug) and Im thinking this asus board is "smarter" than most others and catches it, if others users have this issue with these coolers and this board im wondering if they need to have the mobo delay this test a second or so? The

Side note the antec kuhler 920 is from the same manufacturer of the corsair h70 series but with an updated copper surface. Always forget the names. Its funny corsair and antec swapped suppliers on their latest series of coolers.

Well cool "Hit the Like button" LOL ! there are a ton of fan plugs on the board plug it into another one and boom no fan error and if youre clever enough splice your temp sensor wire to the original CPU header and it will monitor CPU temp in the bios and rog connect in real time without the voltage leads being plugged into the header.

With the Kuhler i would suggest to turn off any bios control or software that controls the cooler, because sometimes the fans on the radiator would not spin - the pump controller does this already and any other program can slow them down more, and also set the monitoring for this to ignore in bios to get rid of any warnings.
The fans idle at 600rpm which is the lowest setting you can set for the AiSuite monitoring
On my setup I've got the pump plugged into one of the fan headers named OptFan and one of my case fans on the cpu header, just a way to get around the fan warning .
#6 It should be fine as long as you have airflow through your case

For the Realtek driver you need it if you use the onboard audio. The crosshair V use a realtek audio chipset and include Creative sound blaster softwares. Without the realtek driver you won't use 100% of the capability of the sound chipset. I installed the Realtek driver and the Creative softwares and the sound is awesome on my 5.1 speaker system. Hope i helped! and good luck with your new crosshair!!!!:)

Dont disable de asmedia, just change FORCE BIOS to KEEP CURRENT, the asmedia error is because you dont have any drive plug in to that sata port but changing the value un the bios to KEEP CURRENT that error goes away. The fan error in the start up happens with PWM non compatible, just IGNORE the minimal rpms in the bios, the error shows when the pump or fan starts 1 or 2 seconds later after turning on the motherboard on a cold boot, so the bios detects no signal of cooler and shows that error, but the fan or pump are working.
