Crosshair V Formula Z FX 9590 Build Randomly Locking up

Hi everyone,

I've been fighting this freezing issue with my pc for two weeks and I still have nothing. Due to a failed overclock attempt (puff of smoke) I had to rebuild my PC. I initially replaced the motherboard (same model), upgraded the CPU from a FX 8350 to a FX 9590 and picked up a second video card. Since I rebuilt the computer, it would lock up at random intervals. I was able to install windows 10 after several attempts but the locks ups still persisted. I've now replaced the power supply from a Seasonic 800W to an EVGA 1600W, my cooling system from a Corsair H100i to a Thermaltake Water 3.0, and my RAM from AMD Radeon Gamer series to GSkill Trident X memory. Each time I changed a part the outcome didn't change. The computer locks up anywhere between immediately and ~40 minutes.

I've done the following to no avail:

Part testing:

- Unnplugged each of the hard drives, tried have one plugged in at a time as well
- Memtest86+ (Always freezes at some point), with my old memory as well. Old memory works in another machine though.
- Tried only having the Keyboard, video, and power connected
- Tried one video card at a time

Motherboard testing:

- Plugged in 4-pin and EZ-pin along with 8 pin power ports (Still connected)
- Disabled Cool N' Quiet, C1 and C6 states
- Underclocked the CPU to 4.5 and 4.2 GHz
- Manual memory clock settings

I've run out of parts to replace and regardless of what I do the system locks up. If left in the BIOS it will lock up. It doens't even last 30 minutes. Temps at idle are 40 C which is a little warm but it is my understanding that the processor runs hot as well. Right now optimized defaults are set in the BIOS. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since IMWeasel has you disabling turbo core, you *should* be able to lower some settings on the DIGI+ page which will put less stress on the VRMs.

For 23.5 multiplier and no turbo,

Set LLC to Regular
Set CPU current to 100%
Power Phase to Extreme
Switching Frequency to Manual, enter 300 in the box
Duty Control to Extreme
CPU Power Response to Medium

I was able to get my 9590 completely stable with those settings, with Turbo disabled, at 4.7ghz, with 1866 10-11-11-30 DDR, 32GB all banks populated. Runs cooler with that LLC setting than simply leaving it on Auto, and the other settings changes are mainly for stability purposes.

In the CPU menu, I could actually leave CnQ, C1E, and C6 enabled, which in my experience can save almost 80W at idle, versus disabling everything power saving related. No stability issues.

But, the biggest power saver and least issue causing setting is C6, so I would at least leave that one enabled. C6 by itself is a difference of maybe 50 less Watts when enabled at idle.

Also in that menu, I would disable APM platform management and enable HPC mode.

I've updated the settings to reflect what you posted. It still locked up. Afterwards, I purchased an 8370 as I keep reading that the 9590 just isn't stable enough. No changes in the results besides a cooler VRM.

HI all,

I bit the bullet and bought a new Crosshair V Formula-Z and my computer has been running for the past 9 hr with no problems. At idle CPU temp is 36 degrees Celsius. I suppose I shouldn't have ruled out the new motherboard replacement. Does anyone know how to mark this thread as solved? If anything comes up I will update this post. I'm just glad to have my comp back. I'd like to thank everyone who helped. Believe it or not you guys helped me keep a positive outlook on things.
