UPDATE: 5/25/12 3:30:00 EST : I swapped out my 500 watt PSU with my friends 650 and the exact same problem happened. I also tried his RAM too.

Hello,

I just got my parts for my new build and have not been able to POST. When I turn on the power, the power goes on for a second or two then powers off. Right before it powers off the CPU led flashes red. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wU9jHUZDf-4#t=32s

Things I've tried / been able to weed out:

1. Its not a short from the case: http://i.imgur.com/6ioFf.jpg
also note that I tried a video card from one of my older working builds in this picture, and the result was the same

2. I've tried all combinations of RAM

3. The power supply is good (I used the paperclip method): http://i.imgur.com/oZbuP.jpg

4. As noted, I tried the graphics card I bought for this build, and also one from a previous working build and the result was the same.

5. I checked the CPU, and none of the prongs are bent

6. There are fans connected to the CPU fan connections so it's not that.

I don't have another chip or another MOBO so I can't rule out either of those (at least I don't think I can).

I think my motherboard is the culprit though and need to RMA, but I thought I should post first (pun intended).

Specs:
1. CPU - AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBOX

2. MOBO - ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard with 3-Way SLI...

3. MEM - Mushkin Enhanced Redline 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Mod...

4. VIDEO - EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti FPB (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready ...

5. POWER - Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2DB 500W ATX12V Power Supply

Thank you!

Edit: I'd be happy to take more videos of anything if that would help.

What bios version are you using ? (it is on the pci-e lane serial no. sticker on your board)
dont jump to RMA just yet .. could be .. not just yet ..
you may have to flash the bios or have asus send you a chip .. if they would be so kind.

is the board mounted ? are you sure of no loose standoffs or a board short?
when the board powers on .. does the cpu fan spin?

Welcome to ROG.c.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply! I tried to find the BIOS version on the board, but I'm not sure what to look for. What does the BIOS version look like and I will try to find it for you. Also, in my original post i posted a picture of the board, maybe you can see it on there? I will try to find it though.

The board is not mounted and I've checked thoroughly for shorts so I don' t think it is that.

When the board powers on, the CPU fan does spin but powers off with everything else after a few seconds.

Thanks!

it can be the psu, that its too smal for the power thats been pulling by the mobo and your watercooling ( if im not wrong ) and the screencard.
on the mobo: the 24 + 8 + a 4 pin molex have to be plugged in.
on a 560 card they recomend a 550W powersuply minimum ( if i dont remember mutch wrong ).
the card it self CAN drag up to 200W+ ( clocked ones )
so if you know a friend that have a spare laying around mabye you can try it out?
this is my opinion.

I have been using a much older and less power intensive VGA to test because of the power issue, but I'll if I can find one to test.

Thanks!

if you look on the side of the pci-e lanes there is
a long white sticker with the serial number on it ... also the bios version.

In addition to Chris' mention of the BIOS revision number, to identify what version you are using...you need the very last 4 digits, it sounds like you have the original 07xx BIOS. So, the problem isn't your board at all...well we hope not, but that you need to update your old BIOS to support your 8 core CPU. if you happen to have an older CPU around, say a Phenom II. Swap out your 8 core and put that in, fire it up and get yourself into the BIOS....then when you have, you need to shut down your PC for a short while.

To flash your BIOS you will need to do the following

1. Go to www.asus.com
2. Enter information to bring up the Downloads available for CHVF Motherboard
3. Download the latest BIOS 1301
4. Extract the contained ROM file to a FAT formatted USB stick
5. Boot your new PC and get into the BIOS once more
6. Go to the "Tools" tab on the far right
7. Start the EZFLASH utility to update your BIOS

Once you have successfully done this, hit F10 to save and then let your PC reboot and from there, you can install WIndows..

Good luck and let us know how you go 🙂

SOLUTION:

Hello all,

Thank you everyone for your help, I will definitely be updating BIOs; however, that was not the problem. The problem was that my CPU was overheating because of a defective water cooling system, or an improper install by me. Long story short: Used stock heat sink on motherboard and that problem was solved. Now I get an error that says "No suitable device" when I try to boot from optical, but I think I can manage this problem.

Thanks again,

Edit: To solve the No suitable device problem, disable the Asmedia SATA controller.
