Crosshair V Formula + FX-8150, furthering my overclock

I am posting this after reading many threads mainly from @ROG or other sites across the web. (Raja's and Marshalls Crosshair V Guide and 8150/CVF guide respectively)

Also posting for the fact many of us have the crosshair v and the 8150 cause we go "ALL" out on our toys. so this will not only help me, but i'm assuming others as well. (btw, I'm looking for input and advice, My current setup may not be a steady overclock as it hasn't been tested extensively.)

Heres where I am with the collaborative information contained in those guides.

CPU: AMD FX-8150
Motherboard: Crosshair V Formula
RAM: 16GB G. Skill F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR @ 1866 MHz (2 kits) 9-10-9-28 1.5v
Cooling: Corsair H80
GPU: Sapphire 6970

That's all the important stuff, now down to voltages and clock speeds.

CPU x23.5 @ 4715 MHz 1.368 V
FSB x200
CPU-NB - 1.3 V
NB - 1.175V
DRAM 1.5

I had the DRAM @ 1.6 volts when I did the FSB multiplier at 215, which brought my memory speed up to 2005MHz (rated for 1866). I could boot into windows but I had a ("memory management" related BSOD shortly after running benchmarks)

I don't know how Marshall got his FSB all the way up to 260s or higher using GEIL1600Mhz RAM with those timings. I cannot boot past 215FSB and it wasn't stable. What am I doing wrong? I'd like to use these G. Skill 4x4 sticks to overclock past 1866, but how high can I go? 2005Mhz was the limit I was able to POST successfully. Was it the GEIL brand he was using? Or would I be able to take mine past 2133?

One other thing. I noticed on Marshalls final overclock in the 8150 guide his CPU V was over 1.5..... I currently have mine @ around 1.368 and I'm running 4.715GHz on just multiplier. Should my voltages be higher?

I'm looking for advice and how to do this myself. I've read many guides here and there and I'm kinda at a surpass. Looking for all and any comments, please.

Thanks for your time.

When I did that guide for the CHV I was using some rather tasty ram the EVO2 kit if I recall correctly. And each CPU is different, so your voltages will not be the same as what I used. And I think I had the voltage higher so I could up the FSB. And since the memory controller is on the CPU these days your CPU will also effect how good your ram will clock or not.

The main thing is just enjoy your system as it is. If your system works best with multiplier only then that is how it is. Your voltage is very good by the way wanna swap? 🙂

thanks. i always feel like my stuff isn't as good as someone elses...... maybe thats a character defect and a whole other story altogether. I just have to remember to just have fun with it.

I forgot to mention my temps @ 4715Mhz are around 35C under load....... which is like you were saying, that's great huh? Is there any need to go to 4.8-4.9......the magical "5"? Will it make THAT much of a difference in gaming? I mean I probably could get there with low temps like I have already.....right.?

Your temps are sensational. I think there are a couple of FX owner who would gladly swap with you mate. As to 5GHz it is just a number after all. Will you even notice any performance gains? Short answer no. Not one. What you are doing with the CPU is provide sufficient grunt for your GPU to do the bulk of the gaming work, bandwidth so as to not bottleneck a powerful card like the one you are using. When it comes to single threaded applications well in most instances the Phenom was and is better clock for clock.

Doing any video encoding and the Bulldozer is a beast. I have one running 24/7 for my encoding work.

i wish i did know how to clock realy, i did a "oc test" and failed heh.

(fail) "clocked" it to 4.1 ( no bsod now ) and when running prime95 it clocks down to 3.8 and drops down to 3.3 for a sec and up to 3.8 again. ( only runned it for a few mins )

weird huh ? 😛

so i wouldent mind some one to help me ( sorry but i realy dont understand rajas post at all 😞 ( since im a newbie ) )

if the person had the same specs as mine ( cpu and mobo and mem )
