Crosshair V - Do I need to RMA my Mobo or buy new CPU?

Retired

I've spent no less than 8 hours trying to get my Crosshair Formula V to run; my money is on a CPU problem. I casually booted my system up and started browsing in mozilla firefox; then suddenly the screen phased black and the light to say the computer was working information switched off. Pretty strange considering I had been playing Battlefield 3 the previous night with no problems whatsoever. The computer booted once past post and failed before it was able to enter windows. It then refused to boot; it switches on with all the lights and CPU_LED just stares at me in red; using ROG Connect; all I get on the poster is CPU INITIAL; sometimes Detect memory; sometimes TEST CMOS. I've taken out the battery and reset the jumpers; it booted to windows. I observed some abnormally high CPU usage the computer if anything seemed to be struggling slightly with the load. Particularly one of the cores had a higher cpu usage; but it kept spiking. I've observed this core having higher temperatures and been generally slower at calculations in Prime95. This CPU has been overclock previously although I'm just running it at 3.5ghz now its an AMD Phenom II X4 970. I have 2 x 4 GB Dominator GT 1866Mhz memory and I'm currently using a GeForce GTS 250 1gb which I bought for a friend but am now borrowing, so time is quite short as he will want it back very soon. Other problems to note; are freezes in bios. I just find it strange that the screen just turns black after a few minutes in windows; it will only boot when left for a long time. The motherboard seems to be running as normal; I can't imagine it needing to be RMA'd despite hearing all the horror stories. Everything has been running fine up until now; I have had the motherboard a month; most of the components are new. Its just the CPU that has suddenly decided I'm not worth its time. sorry for lack of paragraphing. I don't want to wait a month to get my motherboard back I'm going to buy an FX 8150 by next week I just don't know wether to spend an extra £25 getting the computer store guys to have a look at it; buy a new processor or RMA the damn thing.

**EDIT**

Successfully booted the thing now; and have left it on for over an hour just monitoring temperatures etc. Crashed in Battlefield 3 but still booting normally.
