CPU speed not changing

I've had my Maximus IV Extreme and 2600K overclocked for a few months now, until recently. At one point about a week ago and during a combination of reboots, I noticed my motherboard had loaded the bios defaults on its own. It had reverted back to default clocks, onboard devices I had disabled were now enabled again, etc. I ended up leaving it this way until a couple of days ago when I decided to flash the 2105 bios (up from 1904) and re-do my overclocking. At this point I noticed that my OC profiles were also gone and its possible I may have forgotten a key setting but after doing some research and following guides, I cannot get any CPU speed changes to stick. I can change the multiplier and reboot and go back into the bios only to see that the CPU speed still show 3400 MHz while the multiplier says 40 (100 BLCK). I've tried clearing the CMOS and multiple 'load defaults/reset up the bios but the result is always the same. Any amount of ratio/board tweaking will always have the same stock clock speeds of the 2600K.

Anyone know of something to try?

Hello switch33

When you flash your bios your profiles are lost. They would only work with the bios version they were created with.

When your system became unstable the system will often revert to default. That is normal.

Your BIOS appears to be corrupted to be honest. Please reflash your BIOS to 2005.

Once you relash try small steps with multi. Also change your SpeedStep setting to disable.

Thanks I will give that a try, that makes sense about the profiles. I started looking into flashing back to the 1904 version but it seems that it isn't easy to downgrade the bios versions.

You can downgrade with ease but your profiles are long gone my friend.

You can check your B BOIS to see if that has any saved profiles.

The problem I have with the bios downgrade is I cannot do it through the bios with ezflash because it gives a 'bios out of date' error msg when selecting any version older than the current, so I will be trying the DOS method today (using Linux on the machine currently).

I realize the profiles won't be coming back but at this point I just want to be able to get the MHz to change otherwise it will be a painful RMA. I doesn't appear to have any other bios versions stored either.

Thanks for that guide!

I was able to flash back to the 2001 bios from 2105 using the Dos method but 1904 is a no go in Dos. I tested the 2001 bios settings and still no frequency change when adjusting CPU clocks. 1904 had worked for months since I first got the board so I will try that with the method you posted.

Seems to be getting worse, I tried the ROG bios flash but the bios light only flashes once and does not update.

I booted off of bios chip #2 which had 1304 version of the bios on it, proceeded to flash it to 1904 through ezflash which completed successfully but now it does not post off of chip #2. Tried clearing the cmos and ROG flash on chip 2 but still no post. Also only get the single bios led flash on chip #2 (same as chip #1).

OK lets do this, we are going to do a hard Clear CMOS. That will ensure that no corrupted or scrambled BIOS stuff is present to mess up your post process.

I would like you to remove all the components from your system.
Start with all the PSU cables
Then the hard drives and VGA cards
And finally the battery

Now press power for a few seconds this will remove any residual current from your system.
Clear CMOS button on the in/out panel for 5 secs or so.
Leave to stand for at least 2 hours, it would be better over night

Rebuild and boot up.

I appreciate the help, I will give that try.
