Couple of quick easy questions.............

So, I finally got all my parts and I've put everything together and just have a couple of simple questions.

Is it OK to use the OPT CPU header instead of the CPU fan header? Any difference? I'm using the Noctua DH 14 and I'm using the Y adapter to plug both fans into the Opt CPU fan header as it's easier to reach then the CPU fan header.

Also, I do get the warning at boot about CPU fan error because of the LOW RPM of the Noctua. I know I can set it to ignore in the bios, but does that have any effect on the fans themselves? Will they still rev up when the temps go up if I set that option to ignore? Is there anyway to set the warning to a lower RPM range? didn't see it in the options.

This is probably a stupid question, but......I have my SSD drive which is sata6 plugged into one of the RED sata ports and set as ACHI, does it matter which red sata port it's plugged into? The manual made it seem like there are two controllers and I don't know which I should use.

Hi there! 🙂

Assuming its a RIVE the intel sata ports are the ones to use. These are the two next to the black ports. The bottom column of red ports are the AS media ones.....manual 2-2 and 2-3.

I don't understand the "easier to reach" on the rive is almost made for the NH-D14 plug the middle fan into CPU header the 120 side fan into CPUopt....but as you have it is cool. The "Monitor" tab of the bios has the fan controls..."Fan speed control" you have to enable CPU fan control and then three menu items appear for setting levels etc. p3-32 of the manual:rolleyes:

thanks so much. Yes I have the Rampage IV extreme.

I just checked the manual and had the SSD drive plugged into the Asmedia port and not the Intel x79 ports. The manual doesn't state the difference between the two. Can you tell me what it the benefit of using the Intel sata 6 port? I'll switch it anyway because you said so:)

The fan cable kinda got stuck on the wrong side when I installed the Noctua. I guess I could find a way to squeeze it through and use both cpu fan and opt fan headers. The fans are different sizes so maybe I should have them on their own header.

Also, just tried the OC gamer preset and it went to 4.7 and the temp is 30 at idle and had to change the XMP to profile one to get my Ram to its rated speed. Seems like an easy overclock and now just gotta install windows and check everything under load. Any reason to mess around with manual settings? I find 4.7 really quite good and I'm not looking to stress the chip by putting it up to 5ghz.

I know this is probably a stupid question

but I installed the Noctua DH14 and my video cards, etc. The center fan power cable ended up on the wrong side where the graphics card is and it's a real pain in the ass to remove the graphics card with the Noctua installed. I just routed the cable around the bottom of the Noctua to plug into the Cpu fan header and it's touching the bottom heat pipes. Can this melt/damage the fan cable? LOL Just being paranoid.

But, I have both fans plugged into their own headers, and I switched the Sata cable to the intel controller.

The intel ports just perform better they are faster. They make the chipset and add some secret sauce....I did read up why but can't remember off the top of my head......

I dont think the heat pipes ever get warm enough to melt anything but butter;)

Just watch out with those presets...they are pretty voltage happy and if you don't actively cool the VRM you may find you are throttled down and actually running at less than 4.7. Check your temps carefully. 4.7 is definitely at the top end of even the mighty NH-D14. Much better to learn to overclock yourself....you will probably manage it with a whole lot less voltage. Check your voltage it might be high and running this for a while could degrade the CPU. Check temps with real temp gt and voltage under load with CPUz.....
