Computer made a popping sound

Jobeo

Like a firecracker but maybe 1/2 to 1/4 as loud. It was very distinct and noticeable, startled me.

I did not smell smoke afterwards. I shut the system down and inspected the board / hardware. My first thought was perhaps a blown capacitor?? But I could not find anything noticeable on the board... Although there are cards/wires obstructing some parts.

Everything seems to be working OK. I turned the computer back on and it booted up OK.

So what do you think it could have been? Maybe something inside the power supply?? I figure if something burned up I would smell something but I smelled nothing.

That is odd, loud popping sound would usually mean its not turning back on. If it was mine I would definitely remove some cards and wires to get a good view and visually inspect both sides of everything before you risk damage to other components.
Thanks

It could be the PSU. How long have you had it? Check the voltage monitors from the AI Suite or go into your BIOS to check your power readings (12v, 5v, 3.3v, etc..)

I agree with Chino. 99% it's the PSU! Be very careful!

The 'pop' sound is definitely from a blown cap, and you won't necessarily smell anything. Obviously you'll want to remove all cards and inspect the MB thoroughly. You can inspect innards of the PSU through the vent holes with a flashlight.

I just wanted to add, one time I accidentally shorted out a fan adapter to ground and it sounded like this (single-rail PSU). The computer was instantly turned off, but was fine when I tried it again. So it could have been an intermittent short to ground (anywhere), if the computer turned off afterward.

Check your graphic card, and all capacitors on your system. Remove the motherboard and visually inspect every inch of it. The last thing you want is a blown component to suddenly short your entire system and kill other hardware.

Better to be safe and careful, than sorry and poorer later on down the line.
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

Absolutely .. every inch .. ever card.
If not a blown 'cap' ... which ... most here are thinking 99% it is .. im sure ..
Next .. as indicated above .. psu .. (dust/bugs .. maybe) ..
before I booted it again .. I would definitely check all connections for 'arcing"...
or cut/shorted wire touching/arcing ....

You got lucky .. it booted again.. not shut it down and tear it down to inspect.
Best of luck in this ... please, keep us posted.c.

And if all examinations turn up empty, concider a moskito, (laughing but not kidding!) I got this electric swatter, and very often the moskitos go off with a quite loud bang and a flash (makes my wife and the cat jump). So if a moskito got hurled into your PSU...
So, before this thread turns into "Shoe-bombing moskitos and other funny things that´ll make your rig go POP" or recommendations on CSI moskito forensics ;), do the above mentioned recommended checks.
