Choosing a Graphics Card For Crosshair MoBo.

Im just about ready to submit my order for this new AMD 8150 system build with Crosshair V Formula AM3+ AMD 990FX motherboard. But I cant make my mind up on what graphics card to get. I was going to get the Asus HD 7970 but I notice that its for a PCI 3.0 slot and the motherboard that I have is only PCI 2.0. So then I started looking at other AMD motherboards and Im realizing that none of them has PCI 3.0. Am I missing something here?

Dual 6950s is sweet. Otherwise a custom 6970. And far as I know 7970 is indeed compatible with CHV
Crosshair V
FX-8350
16GB Vengeance
2x Gigabyte 6970 OC Windforce

How? When the motherboard says PCI 2.0 and the 7970 is 3.0?

Thing of it like this. You can use a SSD or hard drive hat is SATA 6Gb/s in any SATA port regardless which variant that port is.

Well it is the same with graphic cards. Your HD7970 will work perfectly. And unlike a SATA port you will not have any loss of performance as the card does not come close to maximing out the bandwidth of the PCIe gen2 lane.

Marketing speak nearly cost someone a sale here. 🙂

The only thing the 7970 is incompatible with is smaller cases.
