C4E stuck on CPU initial

Duikboot

The setup i was using:
- Crosshair IV Extreme
- AMD Phenom II X4 (i think 955 but I'm not sure)
- 2x generic 2GB 1066mHz DDR3
- Generic 350w PSU
- 2x ATI Radeon HD5670
- SATA slots filled with a BD-ROM and 5 HDD's

Last week I purchased an upgrade in the form of a OCZ 650w modular PSU and 2x Corsair XMS3 2GB 2000mHz DDR3.
After installing all the new hardware the system ran fine for about two days. On the morning of the third day, right after the taskplanner activated my internetradio, the whole thing crashed. When I rebooted and switched on my screens (a couple of mins later) the splash was frozen on both screens. After another reboot and since then, no videosignal is being sent at all.

After doing some research online I found out my CPU was almost certain to reject the new 2000mHz RAM, but after removing those nothing changed. I tried using both as wel as one of the old bars in every slot combination that made sense.
After connecting my netbook through the ROG-connect USB port and Bluetooth (thanks for that guys;)) the post string read "CPU Initial" and nothing else. ever.

I tried switching out the GPU's with each other and an old EN8800GT I had laying around. No effect.
I tried flashing the BIOS using USB BIOS Flashback (another tip of the cap to ROG and ASUS for that). Still, no effect...
edit: I tried clearing CMOS a few times with different setups. Nothing.

My question:
Did I just hastily F myself up the A by installing overcharged RAM which caused my CPU to fry or is a simple RMA matter?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the ROG forums, Duikboot.

Clear your CMOS by taking out the battery for 5 minutes then insert it back into place. Then proceed to power up your system. See if that helps.

Thank you Chino 🙂
I cleared the CMOS a few times using the button on the IO plate inbetween the other tries, but no avail...

edit: Every time I boot now there's a repeating ticking noise. That can't be good.

Hello Duikboot / Hoi Duikboot,

I happen to have a same kind of problem, but I am not sure that it is caused by the same problem..

I finished a build for a friend yesterday. It is a fx-8120 installed on the crosshair iv, which -at least I think- has not been seated with an fx cpu before. So it might be possible that the moterboard will not boot because off the fx cpu (being socket AM3+).

But my question is how did you read out the "CPU Initial"? I need to see that value to determine what to do. If I do come accross any helpfull info for you then I will drop a line of course.

Oh by the way, you tried the usb flasback util/option : did you see the process finish or ??

I can't seem to find out what determines if the flasback is correctly finished ... I put in the USB pendrive with the bios file and renamed to C4E.ROM. Then I press the Irog key and the light start to flash for a minute or so (also the orange leds near CMOS1 and CMOS2 blink). After the minute it stops flashing, than I pressed clear CMOS ... I beeps shortly and boots, after 2 sec it shutsdown completely. So what happend when you tried this option?

Did you try the bios flashback with all Hardware still connected to MOBO ?

Always good to see new faces here !

Greetings / Groeten Henk ,

I used the RC poster software on my NC10 netbook connected via the RC Bluetooth function. Quite a nifty feat I think 🙂 Apart from the "System Power Off" message the only thing it reads is "CPU Initial".

Yes, the BIOS flash was succesfull. I took the exact steps shown here

Indeed

Hey Duikboot,

Still not getting any further with solving the problem?

I have googled all over but .... Still the same problem here too.

Question did you read/see this thread ? http://support.asus.com/Troubleshooting/detail.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=Crosshair IV Extreme&s=24&hashedid=lt1ShF6xEn3rlLe7&os=&no=978

Its pretty basic stuff to figure out what can cause the problem.. However I thought this part is quite smart:
connect the connector of speaker to check if there is any beeps

-> did you try that?

In my case ... System starts all fan are running, no alerts, than 1 short beep -> System shuts down immediately. If I connect the iROG usb cable to it and the other and to my pc i can start the programs RC Poster and RC Tweaker.

RC Poster, show system in sleep. RC tweaker shows the temperature that is actually refreshing ... So the mobo seems to at least have some communication means.

Then if I power the system on:
RC Poster states: CPU Initial and
RC Tweakit states: the system is locked...

So far nothing that gets me anywhere but nontheless.

Does anybody know for a fact that to get the C4E working with a FX CPU, you first have to install the latest bios using on older Phenom 2 CPU (socket AM3) or can it also be done without having an ols cpu laying around (as is the case on my part).

Well lets keep it up !

you could get some one with a board to update a bios chip on there CHIVE to the 3027 mail you the bios chip for you to manual replace.
I beleive you can buy the chips online aswell. I have the second bios flashed to 2002, first bios to 3027. Also make sure you have the right bios selected when booting, as that will cause hang ups. They need to Release amd fx final bios .

Duikboot, I personally think your CPU fried, the older AM3+ CPU's had a weak Memory Controller in them and it's just possible with it hanging at CPU Initialize that it's gone south, although you can try an old trick to verify if it's the Board or the CPU. I posted this in another thread but for you I'll Copy and Paste it here:

'Ok as far as I can tell you have performed all of the proper steps except for 1 and I know this test will gather some nasty post unless I explain what you are testing...
1st unplug the 8-pin and if you have it the 4-Pin AUX Power Connectors and then Power up. Tell me if your Fans Spin or not...ESPECIALLY the CPU Fan...

What you accomplishing with this is a Null Connection to the board that tells it the CPU is Installed But Don't Power it up! It's a Factory Test Mode to see if your problem is the CPU or the Board.

Now what the results will show is if the CPU Fan Spins UP in this State the Board is Bad. If the CPU Fan Doesn't Spin Up but the AUX Fans do then the CPU is Faulty. Plain and Simple.

Also I do think you'll be RMA'ing something here just which will it be the CPU again or the MoBo...

BTW, Welcome to the Forums and I hope this gets sorted quickly. '

The only other way to find out if the CPU is bad is to plug it into another machine and test it.

@Henkenator68NL, Good to see that your still around! I hope your still doing well and your Art is coming along though I haven't had a chance to see for a while...to many other things in the way. As to your question you can use the Flashback method to Flash the BIOS and I think there is a thread link to that on HiVizMan's sig or atleast there was. 'YES" you can run the 8150 or the 8350 on that CHIVE with the right BIOS and I do beleive it's the BETA Version you have to use not the Latest but I'm not quite sure on that but I have read in different places on the net like overclockers.net where others have done that with no trouble what so ever but also DON'T OC IT! because you don't have the extra AUX Power Connector and it will MELT the 8pin...There was a posting here where a Member did just that by accident but the board still worked.

I hope this helps the Both of you.
