ASUS Z87I-Pro and four fans to control

Hello everyone,

I want to build my new gaming PC based on the ASUS Z87I-Pro which offer three PWM connectors for fans. All together I want to install four case fans, all 3-pin.

Front: 230mm
Top: 2x120mm
Rear: 140mm

My question are: Can I use a PWM splitter like this one to combine the two top fans? http://www.akasa.com.tw/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&no=181&type=Cables&type_sub=Fan%20...

I guess I cannot control them separatly when I use the splitter, but that is not a problem. My concern is just, that the fans are all only 3-pin and maybe they don't work with a PWM splitter.

If that doesn't work, does anyone know any other workarounds (expect a fan control like the Bitfenix Recon)?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Republic of Gamers forum, KingShinobi.

A little heads up for you. Check your fan's power draw before you go connecting them to the fan headers. The fan headers on your motherboard support a maximum of 1A fan power. So as long as the power draw for both fans don't exceed 1A, you can use a Y splitter to connect both of them to one header.

You can use that Akasa PWM splitter with no problems. But if you're looking for a little bit of style, Bitfenix has some sleeved ones with the color of your choosing. 😉

Thx fot the quick reply. The fans would be two bitfenix spectre pro 120mm. Would they work or do you have some other suggestions for a good amd silent fan?

The COUGAR CF-V12HPB is a pretty awesome PWM fan. It's pretty silent at 17.9 dBA but moves around 70.5 CFM of air.

Ok thx, but the spectre should work as well, right? 0,11A do they say on the bitfenix homepage

Yeah, they'll work without problems. 😉

This will not work. Connecting 3 pin fans to that adapter will result in the fans running full speed. If you are using 3 pin fans the fan power needs to be provided by the motherboard's fan header for control of the speed

Thank you Praz. Chino already suggested a simple Y splitter, which will work and also not overload the header, since the fans only operate at 0,11A.

I must have missed that. I read that the PWM splitter would work and that is not the case here. If you do use a 3 pin Y adapter you will need to be sure that the RPM signal from only one fan is fed back to the motherboard fan header.

how can I achieve that? I will use the exact same fans with the Y-cable. I guess thats the best solution...
