ASUS SABRETOOTH X79 - Overclocking failed?!

Good Evening All,

I wondered if anyone could kindly assist (with a little advice)?

For 18 or so months my PC had been performing fine until one evening, whilst browsing the web, both of my displays (dual monitors) went black! Both monitors were powered on, but I had no display on either.

All other hardware had power, which included the PC (fans whizzing away etc), but no amount of mouse clicks, keyboard presses etc could bring my desktop back - so I powered off.

On powering on, the BIOS returned this message:

"Overclocking failed! Please enter Setup to reconfigure your system. Press F1 to Run SETUP.

First thing of note, unless my ASUS SABRETOOTH X79 motherboard was tweaked pre-purchase, which I don't believe it was - I don't overclock. After pressing F1, I entered the ASUS BIOS utility and exited almost immediately (discarding any changes).

Since then, this issue comes and goes - very random as well. It might happen 30 minutes after powering on my PC, 6 hours into a gaming session or not at all (after a days worth of general usage [web/streaming/gaming/voip]).

This example happened a week ago:

+ PC had been on for 3 hours, 2 hours into a gaming session with friends.
+ All of a sudden, both monitors went black - arghhhh.
+ Whilst shouting some expletives down the headset, thinking that was it - my friends could actually still hear me. They could hear me for approximately 2 minutes until I then lost comms. In terms of audio, I could hear their voices for those 2 minutes, but the audio of the video game I couldn't hear as soon as the monitors went black.
+ Finally I powered off, powered on and saw the same message in BIOS ("Overclocking failed!").

This URL (http://sanuja.com/blog/how-to-fix-overclocking-failed-error) is my error, but unfortunately many of the screenshots don't match when following their resolution. But based on the content, it leads me to believe it could be a DRAM voltage issue. Surely though, if there was a DRAM voltage issue, I'd have seen this Day 1, not Day 540?

If it is a power issue, are there any user-friendly applications for monitor/ logging power? And in particular, what should I look for? I.e. total power consumption just prior to the black screens?

Many Thanks!

P.S. It's late here where I am, so if you did reply - I'll most likely see it in the morning!

Perhaps related to the October windows update? I have an x79 R4BE with a 3970x Sandybridge. 4.5GHz OC using offset mode. Been running without issue for more than a year then starting having idle crashes after the update. Get the same message upon reboot after the crash. I did a web search on idle crashes and found this thread: https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/sandy-bridge-overclocking-and-the-idle-bsod-issue.349315/

I have since disabled C3/6/7 states, and increased by CPU fixed frequency to 750, VCCSA fixed frequency to 500. So far so good. Did run a test dropping CPU ff back to 500 and had a crash after a couple days, so now back at 750.
