ASUS Sabertooth 990FX Rev. 1 and AMD FX9590

Hi all,

Following the massive price drop, I am going to order an FX9590 (€300). Is this CPU going to work on my motherboard - Sabertooth 990FX rev. 1 with the latest official BIOS version, 1604?

Update on (stalled) progress with installing FX-8 9590 in Sabertooth 990FX rev system:
(1) Set (latest 1604) BIOS settings from Auto OC to back to Auto std. Phenom II X6 declocked from 3750 MHz back to 3200 MHz.
(2) Installed 2 x Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-X in my system (replacing 2 x HD7970).
(3) Booted fine into Windows 8.1.
(3) Shut down, switched off PSU & isolated system from power (including PSU power switch to OFF)
(3) Removed Phenom II X6 & installed FX-8 9590.
(4) Reconnected power cables etc.. & switched M/B power switch back on
(5) Powered up system. Motherboard green light comes on, GPUs both functioning & lit like Xmas trees, but no POST activity
(4) Have I exceeded my 950W PSUs output or does this particular 990FX Rev 1 (S/N C2M0BX210761) just not support the 9590?

HELP PLEASE; any sensible advice appreciated!!

Well you must realize that your board is not officially supported and there is a reason for that.The 220 tdp draw that your FX-9590 sucks at full load will tax your VRMs to the max.

So you have taken a gamble and I wish you luck getting it stable.

I have a different board than you, and I took a gamble with my setup. The FX-9590 will indeed utilize what Watts it can if you overclock.

On my set up, I managed to clock it to 5.5GHz but the rise in temps on the VRMs prevented stability, and I have a H105 cooler

I don't know of anyone trying to run the FX-9590 on a rev 1 board, so can't comment there.

To help with my CPU temps, I installed a thin lizzy fan behind the backplate of the CPU and that helped -4-5c improvement,but not much help with the VRMs.

For now the Corsair H105, being a larger radiator can keep up and my system is rock stable @5.2GHz. My ambient is 26-30c and raises to 60-65c on a full load. I got a reasonable score at the ROG benchscores and with a bit more tweeking I'm sure it will improve.

There is no doubt this unit is a beast and i'm glad to have scored one for posterity.

I agree with you about the Claims against the 9590 i my self think its a totally dif chip and believe it was released to help out game devs and graphic disigners or people that Demand the needed power of awesomeness the 9590 can produce. i have a older cross hair IV and i ran a 1090 T on it for years without issues @ 4.2 and sometimes 4.6 with only a 700 watt PSU. so i went out and picked up a 8150 and a 9590. Both run on the older board and im able to oc the 8150 to 4.0 running stable but a tad warm. i have been playing with the 9590 and have had it up to 5.6 ran for a few hours and and crashed but i can run it stable @ 5.18 but again a tad warm. So i am in need of a MB the supports the TDP of 250 and i sure everything with be fine. most of the people are not ware of the TDP motherboard limitations that truly hinder the outright performance of the top two AMD chips 9590 and 9370. If im Correct @ release of the chip, all AMD motherboards had the 140 watt TDP limitation that i know has limited the performance reviews, and not giving a true review. i have Talked to AMD and they are telling me that once the new MB's are release that claim they support the Top FX chips, i have to make sure the board has a TDP of 250 to get true performance for my 9590. and if Im correct even now the motherboards top out at 140watt TDP so even if your other chips need anything higher than 140 watts TDP your out of luck and your starving your CPU. so i have up graded my computer with the following but i await the newer mother board able to produce 250 watt TDP

2nd update on the Sabertooth 990FX Rev1/ FX8-9590 saga:

Problem turned out to be 2 adjacent very slight bent pins on the extremity of the CPU. My son was helping me to fit the watercooler unit but was in all all-fired rush to get things done as usual . When I dissembled the cooler/ CPU in the calm, cold light of the next day I spotted the out of line pins; straightened them, refitted the Antec H620 cooler & Bob was my Auntie: running smooth & stable at 4.7GHz & high 30s Centigrade at idle.

SO THE REV 1 SABERTOOTH DEFINITELY DOES SUPPORT THE FX8-9590 as previous contributors have suggested. Going to run it in stock for 2-3 weeks before trying the motherboard's Turbo setting. Current memory speed is 1600MHz; but could go up to 1866. Suspect the conservative overclocking software may leave at that speed anyway.

Thanks to everyone for the postings; particularlyMeanMachine's power consumption info. As I'm also running Radeon R9 290 Vapor-Xs in Crossfire; I can see that my 950W PSU may be challenged at top chat under overclock: & will have to watch out for potential stability problems.:)

3rd update on 990FX rev.1 + FX8-9590.

Once I got the system running stably, I started testing with Unigine, running multiple virus/ malware scanners at once etc. Lo & behold, the Asus monitoring software kept warning of CPU temps consistently above 65C and as high as 72C on full load.

The Antec water cooler radiator had 2 (3-pin) Scythe Gentle Typhoons (c.59 cu.ft./min) attached; running push-pull each at a steady 1850 - 1950 rpm. This definitely didn't seem to be enough cooling power.

Therefore invested in 2 of the new (4-pin) high throughput (2350 rpm; c.90cu.ft/min) Corsair SP120 fans & replaced the Typhoons. The change to 4-pin fans also enabled the Antec H620's software to control them. Also replaced the OEM side case fan with one of the lower throughput spec. 120mm Corsairs; & (with a bit of case modding as the initial setup was only geared for an 80mm fan) put another one of these on the other case side blowing onto the backplate of the CPU.

The results have been startlingly effective: The CPU now idles at 36-38C (previously 40+C) with the twin radiator Corsairs running hush-quiet at only 750rpm! On full load (Corsairs so far not having exceeded 1900rpm), I struggle to get the CPU temp. above the low 60's now; whatever I throw at the system.

Honesty compels me to say, though, that there was also a huge amount of crud on the concealed face of the radiator that certainly can't have been helping thermal efficiency!! I'll need to remember to crack off the inner rad every 6 months or so to clear out any dust buildup.

The FX8-9590 is indeed a hot- running processor (certainly compared with my previous Phenom II X6 1090T); but it can be tamed with the correct cooling gear (& cleaning routine!)


Next step is to give the Asus overclocking software its head & see what happens.:):)

If you can keep your head when everyone else around you is losing theirs - maybe they know something you don't.......

Looks like the warnings of MeanMachine and rhavoc re the Sabertooth Rev1/ FX8-9590 combo were justified. Over the last 2 months I've completely re-jigged my case & installed Corsair 1250 high-throughput fans push-pull on the H620 Kuehler radiator; relocating within the case the Gentle Typhoons that had been cooling it; and also added as many additional 120- or 80mm fans as the CM690 case would accommodate. This resulted in the CPU never getting above the low-60s - whatever game or programme (e.g., Prime 95) I threw at it.

Then, suddenly, Friday last I shut it down uneventfully & unremarkably. Next day - ZIPPO: no boot activity. Pressing DEL during boot-up got me a blank screen. Switched off & removed power cable from PSU, waited unitl green M/B LEDhad gone out, removed & replaced CMOS jumper - no difference. Same + removing & replacing CMOS battery finally got me the "Press DEL to enter BIOS" splashscreen. Pressed DEL - nothing happened except that the system powered down after several seconds.

Continued trying this repeatedly over the last 5 days; but now I'm not even getting BIOS entry splashscreen before power-down occurs. Methinks ye 990FX is now comprehensively borked.

Have a TS request in with Asus; hopefully they may take pity on me & replace under the the "5 year Limited Warranty". If not, do I go for one of the V2 or V3 variants?

I don't really want to have to reinstall my whole system; & if most drivers are common between the Rev 1 & 2/ 3; maybe I can still get back to a bootable system with not to much hassle.:confused::confused:
