Asus Maximus VI Hero - System freezing, somethimes memory management error.

Hello all,

I got a new PC with a Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard.
Somethimes the system freezes, its like looking at a screenshot and also the mouse and keyboard are frozen.
Most of the time its just like this without a error message, it stays unresponsive and if I leave it like that for a while, there is no noticable activities from harddisk or fans and temperatures are oke.
The Windows eventlog show no errors or warnings.

Somethimes it crashes with a memory management error, so far this happened 2 times (freezes are way more often).

Its always happening when working, I havent had the issue while the system was just turned on and idle.
Its happening in different applications, like when I render a video project in Powerdirector or when I game, BF4 for example.

I use 2 x 8 GB of G.Skills Trident-X memory. Its 2133MHz memory and it shows correct timming and speed with XMP enabled in the BIOS.
I ran the latest memtest for hours and there are no errors.

Do you guys jknow what the issue can be? can RAM be faulthy even though memtest shows no errors.
And does it matter if the modules are installed into the Red or Black slots?

Hope someone can advise.

What PSU you have?

My system has the following specs:

Mobo: Maximus VI Hero
RAM: 2 x 8 GB G.Skills Trident-X (2133MHz)
CPU: 4770K
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-D14
GPU: MSI GTX 680 Twin Frozr III
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB
HDD: WD Black 2 TB
PSU: Seasonic X-750

Im running Windows 8.1 with latest updates.
Im running latest motherboard drivers and latest BIOS. (same issue with older BIOS)

The memory I have should work with this motherboard right? Should I install sticks in the red slots instead of the black slots?

It should work fine, i think you have too big psu, because you need maximum 650Watts. You dont have so high end pc that you need 750Watts, i have pc like yours but i have 650Watts and it runs perffect!

runs fine with a 1500w also 😄 cant really overkill a setup with the gpu..

Freeze issue> voltages, memory (most likely), ssd, gpu ( can also be the cause) maybe

Disable all fast boot options in bios, and win 8,1 modes, they are pretty worthless, and useless, and do more harm than good

Install win in UEFI mode

Do it old school, = less issues

note> even tho you use the XMP mode, sometimes the memory dont always apply to the timings, and you can get stuck with issues, and once in a while, some of the brands got the XMP fcked up out of the box

Welcome to the ROG forums, lanzia.

Please clear your CMOS. Then proceed to run Memtest86+. There is a guide linked in my signature if you need help running that utility.

I did what you asked and again had no errors on the memory.

Now Im getting more errors, When I tried rendering a video I got an BSOD saying PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.
I googled but it can be all kind of things it seems.

After that I got another BSOD about nvlddmkm.sys
This one seems to be related to the graphics card.

Next I could not boot into windows again because of a nvlddmkm.sys error.
Reinstalling Windows again 😞

i have build many, many computers, and its rare that components are broke upon delivery, very rare..

If you get an error saying memory management, id start looking there first, often a freeze issue is related to the memory, mainboard (memory) or gpu.. mainboard more often than gpu

memory > voltages, timings, overall settings

find the problem instead of RMA, next time you get an issue again RMA?

Today they add so much crap and features as a part of the marketing, and you'll be lucky to set up a stable system, if its your first build

Its not plug and play anymore, now its concern and RMA instead

Especially with win8 and 8,1

Just installed 8,1 yesterday on a new build
