Asus Maximus V Sli Issue with Asus GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP

Hi forums. So here is my issue.

My sli setup does not show up as 8x/8x. One of the cards shows up as pcie 8x. This is the card that goes on the top most slot. The other one is showing up as pcie 1x. This is the card that goes on slot 3 (the black pcie 8x slot). I was under the impression that both cards would have to run at 8x/8x.

If anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated. I've tried reseating the cards, I've tried switching each card in different slots (staying in the boundaries of the recommended sli configuration by the asus manual). Also tried both asus cards on their own and they both work. Funny thing is that even each card on their own, they run at 8x pcie on the top most pcie slot, not at 16x.

current rig setup

i5 3570k @ 4.5 ghz w/cooler master nepton 140
8 gb gskill sniper memory @ 1600 mhz
asus maximus v extreme mobo
corsair h850 psu
2x asus gtx 680 directcuii top

Here are pics from GPU-Z specs.

So did my original message with all my info disappear? I can not see the original message I posted? Can anybody confirm this? If so, so I can post all the info again....

Okay, so here goes again.

System specs

Asus Maximus V Extreme mobo
i5 3570k @ 4.5 ghz watercooled with Cooler Master Nepton 140
8 gigs G.Skill Sniper
Corsair h850 PSU
Trying to Sli two Asus GTX 680 DirectCU II Top Cards.

When Sli'd in the configuration detailed by the mobo manual, my cards show up as 8x/1x

I've tried reseating them. I've tried chaning them to different pci-e slots (which I later realized is USELESS, since the only possible SLI config is 1st top slot + 3rd black slot, which actually leaves the cards sandwiched). I tried turning on only the slots i would use in the pci-e switches section.

Also reseated the procesor.

I've done every possible thing I can imagine, and I've just gotten really frustrated.

Picked up this board because I thought I could use the pci-e lanes in any configuration due to the size of the heatsink on the Asus GTX 680, but nope. Really pisses me off that the mobo restricts you to use only one possible SLI config. And to make matters worst, it appears that the 3rd. pci-e lane is not working properly.

Is there a way to use other SLI configs, or am I doomed?

Also, another funny thing, 1st pci-e slot does not pick up any of the two 680's in 16x. Only runs them at 8x.

Hi hermit_panda,

I don't fully understand what your problem is, Are you getting no output to your monitor or is it that you can't configure SLI as you wish?

As I understand it and these are only my opinions.

Moving from 16x to 8x causes either very small or no performance drop since current bandwidth utilization is not saturated even with the most powerful cards and the two slots will most likely both run at x8 anyway.

The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots espectively. When PCIEX8_1 is used, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is used, the PC IEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode)

Maybe someone will come on with better SLI experience once they know the real issue, and I can understand your frustration as those are quite bulky cards.

Please also let us know you PSU?

Gimme a sec, I'll post up the screen captures of both cards from the GPU-Z program.

In SLI, the top most card runs at 8x. The card in slot 3 (the first black slot) runs at 1x.

They should both be running at 8x.

Here is the GPU-Z of the top most card (pci-e slot 1)

And here is card in slot 3 (black slot)

Both cards work at 8x individually when they are placed on the top slot. I'm thinking this is more of a motherboard issue.

YesI agree they should both be running @ 8x.

OK, so have you tried changing the 1X slot from AUTO in Bios. Maybe that is default value and is it possible to raise the value.

Also: Are you able to connect an SLI bridge, cause I remember on the GeForce Forum that this can help.

I'm interested now cause I'm going SLI myself shortly, and again I asked if you were getting out put to your monitor and your Power supply details please,

I've changed the 1x slot from AUTO, to gen 2, to gen 3. It still keeps showing up as 1x.

I am using a SLI bridge to connect both cards.

The psu I am using is a Corsair HX 850.

I'm going to try and RMA the board.
Even if I do get to RMA the board, I will still have issues with the high temps that are generated due to the proximity of both asus directcuii top cards getting sandwiched. The sli config restriction is just freaking annoying.

one more observation

tried putting each card individually in the third slot (the black one), and each one did give me video output. in the bios, they only work at 1x.

I've had enough of this. Back to one slot video. Will be RMAing this mobo.
