Alternatives to Maximus V Fromula

I want the M5F mainly for its watercooling ability, but I'm not going to wait much longer and I'm looking for other options.

I'm considering the P8Z77-V Pro or Premium. Doesn't look like any EK-waterblocks for these boards have been released yet.

So the question is: Do I even need to watercool the motherboard even though I will have very low airflow through the case?
Overclocking will be fairly moderate.

I would say almost certainly not mate. My Z77 boards none of them get hot in teh Chipset/ VRM area evan when pushed with benching multiple graphics cards at high voltages. Remember these SB and Ivy CPU dont draw that much current either evan when overclocked so the heat is very manageable.

I would only say better cooling is necessary than stock on the X79 platform when overclocking a Hex core hard and evan then its more VRM than chipset that needs it.

Are you going tri fire or multiple cards??? Otherwise the Gene is a great board.

I will probably just run one GTX680. Not more than two anyway, so the Gene might be a good idea.
It feels like I'm not getting the full feature set with an mATX board, but I guess it does have every feature I actually need.

Can Gene run SSD-caching on the non-intel SATA 6gb headers?
