AHCI - SSD - Install time drivers etc.

Hi guys,

I have a few questions you may be able to advise on but I will keep them separate to avoid confusion.

I recently installed the Rampage and did a fresh install of Windows 8 (64 Bit). As I was not planning to use RAID I did not install any drivers on first boot...

I did install latest Intel chip-set drivers and the other Intel drivers AFTER install.

The install went perfectly until i stupidly decided that I may need the ASMedia driver - I followed a guide on-line, involved making registry changes and rebooting after changing BIOS to AHCI mode, little did I realise (end of a long day) I was already in AHCI mode... DOH!

Long story short - Windows would not boot at all after hours of "repairing" etc. I had to roll back to 20 minutes after install the OS. I am now fully back up and running perfectly. I cannot really install again as I have so many authorisation for plugins and software that it would really be a pain.

However, I still did not install any driver at boot time - (the Intel Rapid Storage one I think you guys mention).

So my questions about this are:

1. Do I really need that driver? Bearing in mind I am not in RAID or ever planning to be. What difference would it make and if so how would I install it now? I suspect too late.

2. I am planning to clone the install to an SSD shortly, using Paragon which will clone GPT perfectly apparently. Once again - Will I need to do anything special to get it going on the SSD.

I hope that makes sense and I have not been too vague.

Thank you.

Not at all. If you're not doing a RAID array, you don't need the Intel RST driver/software.

Not at all. Just make sure that the SSD is big enough to house the cloned installation.

The Samsung 840 512GB is a good candidate. 😉

You can clone your OS to a smaller hard drive if needed. I do it all the time with notebooks.
