SLI 970 or Single 980?

I'm on a budget I can wait a month or so to get my 980 or I can purchase a 970 now and get another 970 down the line. What would be best? I plan on overclocking, have MAximus V Formula. My plans are to have the ultimate workstation. I want to be able to access my PC remotely from mobile devices like the nvidia Shield and never have to worry about lag or hick ups.

if I got the 970 route I'll eventually upgrade to the 980 TI but if I go the 980 route i'll probably just buy another 980 instead of a TI.

What sounds the best and what will last me longer and will I notice a large performance gap between having a 970 over a 980. Also how much of the gap will SLI 970 fill and exceed.

I'm new to multi-display but I'll have a (23 or 24")triple monitor setup down the road but I'll start with 2560X1440

In that case, start with a Strix GTX 980 in the meanwhile. You'll have no problems gaming at High to Ultra settings at 1440P.

How would a Asus 970 Poseidon fair with the same resolution?
