Problem with Strix 1060 GTX OC

Hi, new customer here. I recently put together a new computer and went with a Strix 1060 OC GPU. I put all of it together and since then I am having trouble with the GPU.

I have seen in reviews that the card doesn't run terribly hot often, nor is it very noisy but the moment I launched a game, the card practically took off before the system shut down. Any time the card goes over 50% load, it heats up to 80 degrees with the fan making more than a little noise. The system shut down about 20 seconds into a Furmark test. Anyways, long story short, the cooling doesn't seem to do what it is supposed to do. It has enough power, enough room the card is properly connected. I am at the point where I think that I may have gotten a faulty device. Anyone have any experience with this kind of issue or should I just send it back?

Hi XDDX

Welcome to the ROG forum.

Try the newest Nvidia driver 375.63, I'm pretty sure this should fix you up.

Oddly enough that made things a lot better but the card still seems to be running very hot (and very noisily). I uninstalled the drivers I had (I let Geforce Experience update them) and installed the one you posted manually.
I honestly didn't expect that... So what kind of issue is this?

Edit: Furmark still puts the card at 95 degrees more or less instantly, no matter the fan speed.

Hmmm it shouldn't be running near that hot, just for a test are you able to set the fan speed manually to 100% ?

If you are try that and run furmark and see what temps are.

If you had 375.57 driver installed before, it was a bad driver and nvidia changed it, it wasn't letting gpu tweak II save settings.

You might want to restart your pc if you haven't already just to make sure the changes take affect.

Manually set Fan to 100% and did a Furmark test and it still goes to 95 degrees (and keeps going higher, it happens pretty much instantly as well) http://i.imgur.com/CqtYNyh.jpg

I rebooted both after uninstalling and installing the newest drivers.

All right something doesn't sound right with temp at 95c.

Does it thermal throttle? That is to say when it hits 80c - 82c do the clock speeds and voltage drop?

Is there even a way to turn that off? I thought it would do it automatically by default. How can I check?

No, there's no way to turn thermal throttling off.

You can check GPU Tweak II by ALT+TAB out of your game then ALT + Enter to return to your game.

It seems to be doing something. Once the temperature goes over 80 (which happens very quickly), the GPU clock goes from ~1800 to ~1600. Nothing really obvious seems to happen with the power.

OK yep it's thermal throttling, do you have plenty of airflow in your case?

I'm thinking it's one of two things either your gpu is starving for air or the heatsink isn't making good contact.
