Overclocking ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX 8GB

Hi, I am looking at the non factory overclocked ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX 8GB. (STRIX-GTX1080-8G-GAMING).

It's specs are:
OC Mode - GPU Boost Clock : 1771 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1632 MHz
Gaming Mode (Default) - GPU Boost Clock : 1733 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1607 MHz

The next model up I was looking at is the ASUS ROG GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX-GTX1080-A8G-GAMING

It's spec are:

OC Mode - GPU Boost Clock : 1936 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1784 MHz
Gaming Mode (Default) - GPU Boost Clock : 1898 MHz , GPU Base Clock : 1759 MHz

I can get a good deal on the first model from a friend. The STRIX-GTX1080-8G-GAMING would be about $85 less than the STRIX-GTX1080-A8G-GAMING. Do you think that it would be a good deal and could I overclock it any to match the speed of the higher model? Any advice would be great. I currently have a Asus 27" G-gsync 144mhz but I would like to eventually get a 4k monitor. Thanks.

Hard to say. Overclocking potential is pretty much down to fortune. Sometimes you get a good overclocker, sometimes you don't. 🙂
