GTX 980 Strix perfromance at 1080p

Hello all! I just want to make sure that my ASUS GTX 980 Strix is performing as a GTX 980 should. I got it yesterday! I am pretty excited over it! This is my first time to spend over $350 for a GPU, let alone $589.99 for one. I think that this card is performing very well, however, I did expect a little bit more.

System specs as follows:
Corsair Air 540 Case
ASUS P8Z77-V mobo
Intel Core i5-2500K OC'ed to 4.5Ghz @ 1.35 VID (load temp is 62C) H100i CPU cooler
ASUS GTX 980 Strix 4GB; factory OC from ASUS out of box. I have not done any overclocking on this card..yet. (load temps on auto fan config 71C)
Gskill 8GB of RAM 9-9-9-24 @1600
Sound Blaster Titanium HD
Seasonic X-650 Gold
Samsung 830 120GB SSD
OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD
WD Green 1.5TB HDD
Three Aerocool Sharks 140mm fans.

BenQ 24" monitor; 1920x1080. All games were tested at that res, no DSR was used in any testing.

Games I tested:

The Witcher 2 FPS: 57-75 occasional dip to 45
All settings on ultra; Ubersampling disabled.

Dragon Age Inquisition FPS: 40-58 all settings on ultra MSAA x4

Shadow of Mordor FPS: All settings set to ultra. 61-80

Far Cry 4 FPS: 31-76; all settings on ultra. TXAA x2. Frame rate is really all over the place in this game. Ubisoft, gotta love 'em, right.

Crysis 3 FPS: 37-120; Settingd maxed out; SMAAx2. Frames avg 57-72 outdoors.

GTAV FPS: 65-80 with occassional dip to 38fps. Custom settings; advanced graphics turned off, MSAA x2, TXAA x2. Most settings set to very high or ultra. Grass and shadows set to high. Reflection set to ultra with 8x MSAA

I'm simply asking whether or not this is in the realm of normal performance for my card, given my hardware, of course. Basically, I came here to get reassurance. Why come here? You lot here own these cards. So, I'll ask: does the performance of my card seem good? I am running 350.12 and I used a combination of Shadowplay (nVidia Geforce Experience) FPS counter and Fraps to "record" my FPS.

Yes, those numbers sound right. A single Strix GTX 980 is awesome for 1080p gaming.

I dont play those games so not sure. In Bf3 and 4 im maxxed out at 190 to 200fps as I think its capped at 200. Wow I believe is capped at 100fps and im bouncing between 85 to 100. Have you downloaded gpu tweak and messed with the setting on it. It can help out

Drop, I have BF4, but it isn't installed. I've thought about installing it again though, but then I realize how terrible I am in general as FPS titles online, so yeah.

Thanks, Chino! I had thought that they were, but again... I wanted to just make sure that I was getting my money's worth. I bought this specifically for The Witcher 3, well primarily, because there's also Batman Arkham Knight too.

LOL Yeah I suck at the game to but can relieve stress after a day with the kinda people I work with haha. The strix 980 has been an awesome card for me so far. If you want to mess with gpu tweak we can change a few things and see how it performs for you

You know, I do have GPU Tweak, but I just haven't messed with any settings. It's new software for me as I'm used to Afterburner and EVGA PX. I'll fiddle with it.

I did notice that in HWmonitor my core clock for my 980 hits 540MHz, however in HWinfo64 and in GPU-Z it hits from 1309 to 1329, I think. Neddless to say I think it's obviously just a bug with HWmonitor. The problem for me though is that I can't run HWinfo64 and Corsair Link for my H100i as they conflict, unless I exit LINK. So while this topic is resolved for all intents and purposes; do you have any recommendations on software monitoring other than HWmonitor?

And no, I won't be at all disappointed with those two games and my GTX 980 at stock will handle The Witcher 3 on ultra @ 60fps without NIVIDIA hairworks and physx, however that just gives me an excuse to overclock this card! 😛

HWmonitor shows the same for my Zotac 980, it just stays at 540MHz for some reason. However, in GPU-Z it hits around 1300MHz. So yes, I believe it's a bug in HWmonitor 😉

For GPU temperature and frequency monitoring, GPU-Z is all you need really. No need to run any other temperature monitoring program alongside it. Doing so will just cause polling errors and misreadings.
