GTX 1080 STRIX causing ASIO latency issues

I have discovered that while running any of the 4 latest nvidia drivers with the GTX 1080 Strix installed, my ASIO driver usage will spike constantly causing audio to crackle and cut out.
This is when running audio through any recording software. I ran latency monitor and discovered that the nvidia drivers are indeed the culprit.
If I reinstall my gtx 970 strix and use any of the same drivers my ASIO usage is fine and Latency monitor shows everything is suitable for realtime audio.
It seems there is something specific to the GTX 1080 STRIX or maybe 1080s in general that are causing this issue.
The only way I have found to alleviate the problem is to set windows power management to performance.
This will keep the ASIO usage from spiking into the red and causing crackling or drop outs but it is still too high.
Anybody have any ideas. I have never experienced this issue with any nvidia cards or drivers. I have been using the same RME Fireface800 audio interface for years. I have tried several
fireface drivers. They all work fine with the 970 and any of the nvidia drivers.
This issue also occurs on my brothers system which is basically identical except he is using a different audio interface with ASIO drivers.

My system is
intel 4690k
8gb corsair ram
asus hero vii motherboard
coolermaster 800 watt psu

thanks for any help.

General GTX 1080/1070 issue at the moment when Video card is in idle state, if card is running a higher clock than idle the latency is much less although I haven't had any sound issues using my FE card
