Hello, peeps, first time poster on this forum.

Sad to say i have a problem, not a personal one happy to say, although i almost cried a little last night (

So i have 2x 980 Strix's had them less than a year, I've recently installed the new drivers on them and pop
Massive lines horizontal, unable to use the cards in sli, pc will not boot.

So, I've reinstalled win 7 64bit started pc without any drivers

I've removed the what i beleve to be the faulty card and tried them in all pcie lines to ensure the mobo is ok. one card works fine,
whilst the other card has lines. the faulty card will not allow me to go any larger than 800x600 res. gpuz tells me the card only has 1999g memory and gpu clock speed of 0

i've found a youtube vid of the problem which is the same as mine. ie the lines of doom 😛
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2TAuLKcNt4

I suspect this may be a hardware failure on the card - anyone had this before? and can you confirm this is card death.
also it was just after I've updated nvids drivers. was this coincidence?

Hello GoldenChallis

Welcome to the ROG forum.

It seems one of your strix 980's has gone faulty if you have lines on the screen, trying them separately confirms that. It's strange updating the driver would cause that but you need to get on the phone with asus support (the medics) to set up an rma.

Your strix 980 should have a 3 year warranty.

Here's a few things to try before you RMA the suspected faulty GPU.
1. Clean your PCIe lanes.
2. Clean the GPU's PCIe connector.
3. Make sure the GPU is seated correctly.
4. Install the NVIDIA drivers to see if GPU-Z reports the proper information.

Also, do you see these lines only when you're booted into Windows? Or do you see them in the BIOS as well?

Thanks for the reply guys, Chino - I've removed the card which i believed to be faulty and tried it in a few pcie lanes with the same result, horizontal lines, just like the youtube vid in my original post. its in the bios and during post with asus logo screen, when in windows, unable to change res to
anything higher than 800x600. It seems to have died, however as i've said its just really odd that it happened after a driver update.

how it started.
new drivers installed, made sure sli was on. started game.... game starts then black screen. fans go mental ..auto reboot, fans go mental on both cards, cards with lines during post. asus logo. then screen goes black and continues to boot up.

GPUZ did the card had only half the GGR5 and GPU speed was 0 - swapped cards and done the same thing, other card was fine and everything was as should be. after that i took the sick card into the garden and put two rounds in her head to put her out of her misery and prepped ready for Asus
RMA, 🙂
